So I have an "blue" American Pit Pull Terrier. She is about a year and 1/2 old. Within the last 2 weeks, her skin has started to become very irritated and red. So bad to the point while in her kennel during that day, she was rubbing against it so much her hair was falling out. She was also chewing on her hind legs and tail, and making her hair fall out. We have always taken our dogs to North Davidson only because the doc there cares so much for the animals, he doesnt charge and arm and leg to be seen. Well we decided to try treatment outself. Started feeding her benidryl and washing her with the oatmeal shampoo and nothing was working. We started to fear that it might now be her allergies, but infact be some kind of mange. It had gotten so bad, so quick that her boobie areas were swollen to the point it looked like she had, had pups. So we made an appointment for her to be seen today. Today she had a check up, skin scrape(which determined it was allergies), a cortisone shot and 3 different kinds of medication. All of this for a whopping total of 76 bucks. I figured we would have a bill around 150-200, which is still cheaper than any vet i have taken any of my dogs to. I really have to give this place credit! The doc is always on call and is very friendly and LOVES all animals! Here is some pictures to show how bad it had got.

Here you can see it around her eyes and on her chest.

She wouldnt sit still long enought to get a clear pic of her chest, but you can still see it.

Yep, gotta love North Davidson Vet and Dr. Schmunk. It's where I take my dogs. He's the one who put down my last dog for me and the way He and his assistants treated me and my dog Gus that day, well, I'll always take my animals there. Wish I could take my kids there too.

Poor pup, glad she is going to get better!

Poor pup! I hope the meds get her straightened out.
FWIW... 2 of mine went down this path with allergies and itching. After we got the issue medicated, I started giving them a 1000MG fish oil cap every day. No more itch problems and thier coats are in super condition. Matter of fact, the vet asked what I was doing. He researched it and started recomending it for all his itchy dogs after seeing Petey's transformation.

This might sound kinda crazy but she might be allergic to the laundry detergent you wash her bedding for her crate. I have seen dogs become allergic to laundry detergent, and by the look of the hairloss, its in the areas where she lays down on. Try washing her bed in fragrance free hypoallergenic soap.Dogs can also have a allergic reaction to the food they eat. Just my 2 pennies. And the vet you take your dogs to sounds great, not too many vets around like that anymore.

My pit mix has the same issue so I bought some allergy shampoo for her and it has helped out quite a bit. Both my pooches need to hit up the vet so I'll have her checked out when we go. Glad your little girl is doing better.

Gorgeous girl youve got there by the way!

Thanks! With the amount of money we have in her, I couldn't let her walk around looking like a stray homeless flea bag!

Ya we live on the highrock side of Lexington. We drive passed at least 3 vets before we get to North Davidson. Vet.

A little update. It has been 10 hours since her injection. A lot of her redness is gone, and her titties are not swollen anymore from the infection.

Glad she's looking/feeling better!

We switched to grain-free food and give fish oil capsules and sometimes benedryl when it gets really bad for our boy. He gets 'ashy' mostly but sometimes gets hot spots or will chew the hair off the back of his legs. We think he's allergic to fleas (they're treated but still pick them up outside sometimes) and maybe some grass/hayfever type stuff... his eyes will get itchy, too. Sometimes washing them too much actually can make it worse, because it dries the skin out. Brushing can help, if the skin isn't already irritated.

Wow, thats VERY cheap. My vet charges 50 to even SEE my dog. I took her in about 2 months ago because she cut her paw on something in the yard and they charged me 121 for seeing her, cleaning it, bandaging it, and 2 kinds of medication.

That's why we continue to go back to him. About 3 years ago, we drove down to SC and picked my wife up a silky terrier. After about 3 days we knew something was wrong with the pup. We went to a different vet this 1 time and was charged 225$ for an exam and X-rays. Come to find out, the dog had swallowed a Christmas tree light, the small ones and had 2 huge stones in her bladder. That quoted us around 1500 big ones for surgery to get the stones out.

We went back to North Davidson and for surgery, IV's, 2 week boarding stay after surgery, dog food and medication. He charged us 225$!!! This is just 1 of my other reasons why I will always go to Dr. Schmuck!

I still use N Davidson Vet, even though I now live in Durham. It's worth the drive.

I took my dog there once because he was very lethargic and wouldn't open his eyes. The vet gave him a thorough evaluation and finally went to the back room and brought out a small kitten who was very playful. Even that would not arouse the dog. The vet told me the dog was dead and then handed me a bill for $100. $50 of it was his fee and the other $50 was for the cat-scan.

Another +1 for Dr. Schmunk and NDV. I came home today and found my female Boxer with a swollen mouth. I'm thinking she was stung by by something in the mouth. I ran her to NDV where it was already after hours but the Doc was still there. The after hours fee was $65 and the doctor came out to the waiting room checked her out and agreed on her being stung. Two shots, a script some heart wormer since it was time again and out the door for $49.

Amazing!
