Last weekend, while wheeling with some friends, we about lost one our own. Let me say, in all honesty, between all of the rolls I have seen on You Tube, all the rolls I have seen in person, and even my own end over end and barrel roll, this was the worst I have seen. I am nearly 53 years old and wore out, been wheeling since I was 16, and for the first time,...............I was scared. My very good friend, Deanna Poplin, AKA Pinky, was wheeling with us. Where this all started was on a short trail, that I would no how, no way described it as even moderately nasty. She was exactly where I had been, only maybe a half hour before. She was caught sitting sideways on a hill, and not a really steep hill at that. Then it happened. Her Jeep teetered a little bit, and the slowly came up on two wheels, and over she went! I was watching, I as well as everyone else, saw it and only expected her to lay it on it's side. Nope, it kept going! It was just not in a place where you'd expect it, and no one was taking pictures or videoing, it happened just so quick. So I'd guess 10-15 rolls later, she was at the bottom of the hills, came down at last on all 4's, and dazed. As the three of us at the bottom were scrambling, not know where it would go, we waited until the last min to go where we did, to get out of the way. As soon as it was down, we scrambled to stop the Jeep from going further. We stopped it, got it in park to keep it from rolling further. As I was moving to get out of the way, as fast as I could, I was on the lower side, the drivers side. When I looked at the Jeep still moving, I saw something that absolutely scared the shit out of me. Deanna was hung out the door opening, flopping like a rag doll. I honestly thought she was dead. But by the time we got her stopped, she was upright again. VERY dazed! She had a goose egg sized knot on her forehead above her left eye.
IN conversation with her, she didn't remember this. But, I saw it. No way t confirm it, but I think she was knocked out for a short period. All she can remember was holding on. As soon as we could ascertain she wasn't with broke back or neck, she got out with help, walked to a rock and sat down. She immediately look at her Jeep, and cried out about the damage. We had no concern at that point, about the Jeep, only of her and how bad she was hurt. Long story short, we got her down the mountain and on her way to the hospital. She did suffer a concussion, but other than that OK. Yes still very sore from one hell of a ride. So what did I, and others learn?

1. when you have a cage built, make sure it's by someone who nows what they are doing. Make sure it's built out of the right kinda material! I am so very thankful that Scott Thomas of Metalwerx built this cage.
2. You never know when something like that will happen.
3. Those harnesses are in your rig, aggravating yes, but, they will help keep you in.
4. Head protection. I remember a thread a long time ago about this very thing. I was one of those who didn't want to wear it. Some of our group have ordered a helmet, I ordered mine this morning. All that were there that day will agree, they will be wearing one.

I know, and you know. Hind sight is 20/20! Several things could have done. Bottom line, Deanna herself requested that I put this out there. She wanted others to know what she went through, and more importantly, she wanted others to know what they themselves can do, to make sure this doesn't happen to them. If her experience, and her injuries, and this story will save even one life, then that's what she wants.

Again, it's easy to read this, and say oh I'd do that and I'd have done this. Not the purpose of this. So please, she has suffered. so Flaming will not do anything but contribute to the pain she already has. The good lord wasn't through with her, and she is here to help others not have happen to her, what did.

I Know one old geezer who WILL wear shoulder and crotch straps more often, and Will pull my cap off and wear a helmet, for the first time ever.

One of the cool things after all this, is, she is talking about the repairs to her Jeep. She is buying a Pink helmet, and I venture to believe, I will see her straps on. Not just lap belt like so many of us do, but all of them! As I told her, she's a tough bird, and I am so very glad, she is still with us.

Glad to hear she is ok. Its always terrible and a helpless feeling to watch something like that unfold.

Glad to hear she is alright and wish her and rig a speedy recovery!! I would gladly wear a helmet and shoulder straps I ever get the chance to wheel. And yes I was real guilty of only wearing the lap belts 95% of the time.

I'm so glad one our own is still with us and not more seriously injured. I have always had a voice in the back of my head saying put your shoulder harnesses on, you have them for a reason.

I'm so thankful that Dianna is for the most part unharmed from what could have been a tragedy.

Let us all learn from this and be more thoughtful moving forward.

Truly thankful and glad she wasnt hurt worse!

You are so right we all take so much for granted in what we do. Not that long ago (seems like yesterday still) we lost another friend on a slow gravel road who didnt have his shoulder straps on.

I'll go one step further with Chip's advice. On top of having a good cage, for those building a rig please pay attention to head room. I cant tell you in the ECORS days how many rigs we inspected where I would not have wanted to be in a roll over even with a helmet. Ideally with your straps buckled and tightened your helmet should not be able to contact any tube.

Thanks for the reminder!

Good reminder, my last bad roll was in Harlan and I had promised my little girl I would wear my seatbelt the whole time and it went down on the drivers side hard.....wake up call for me!! Glad she is OK!!!! Wishing a speedy recovery to her and the jeep!!

Thank you Chip for posting this up for me.
Also thank you all for your concerns and kind words. I will be okay but I'll tell ya that was one heck of a ride....OMGosh!!
PLEASE everyone we really need to start wearing our harnesses and helmets also check your rig good from one end to the other, top to bottom and anything that can come loose inside such as fire extinguishers, tanks, etc.
Build your cage right!
I will put bars at my doors now too and a hood hoop.
Please spread the word and keep a eye out for non wearing seatbelts...things can happen so quick!
I love this sport and the people so gonna get her fixed as soon as we can and will see most of you on the trails!!
Won't miss me with a bright pink helmet!!

Glad to hear all is well pinky. Just one ? Cuz I have had this into the back of my mind for a long time, what type of helmet are y'all getting. I've looked at a few but don't know if I like the mx style or the type you see people like tim cameron wearing.

Joe,
As you know as well as anyone Rob and I had a habit of over studying things others take for granted.
I'm not making a recommendation but when I bought my helmet I made sure it had Snell AND DOT stickers.
If you hit both you get a pretty broad scope of tests. Either have their holes.

Most MX helmets are designed to prevent scrapes and scratches, we need impact absorption.

I saw the pics on FB and that alone scared me and Michelle. We are looking into helmets.

Also, me being a short guy, I just raised the seat on the J truck about two inches for better visibility. I am rethinking that because it put my head fairly close to the top of the door jam.

Glad you are OK @PinkyYJ

This pointed something up to me, for sure.

We have become too complacent when we pull up on a big hill or big obstacle. I remember seeing Nazir at Dixie run, always wearing his helmet. I remember thinking, "there's a guy who values his brain, for sure". Now that I think about it, shouldnt we all? I have been fortunate in all my flops to never have been hurt. But it only takes one knock in the head and the control unit goes dead.

Even as some will tell you, I have nothing to lose if I hit my head, (o_O) Ill be wearing a helmet on at the very least the bigger obstacles and definitely the big hill climbs!

Glad to hear you are OK.

I started taking my mountain bike helmet with me on some trips, but i dont think i ever wore it. I either left it in the truck or did not bother to put it on at the bottom of a hill. That is going to change.

Witnessed that entire roll first hand. Thought she would just flop in the woods but kept fucking coming, flipped in every damn way then picked up speed.
I thought my wife of 30+ yrs was dead, it was that damn bad!
Had time to think about life without her and it SUCKED!

ALWAYS wear your lap belts at all times, harnesses on obstacles and helmets.
A lot of us now this can be a pain in the ass but your brain is everything!
While Pinky had a concussion, I talked her into buying me a Lear Jet. She agreed. See how bad a concussion can be!

Thank you all and please be SAFE!!
Here are a few pics I want to share...

PLEASE everyone spread the word and make sure if you see anyone that is not wearing their safety devices MAKE them!! Also watch out for bystanders, make sure we all take every safety measures out there!!

Broke my heart to hear about that sweet young lady who lost her life last week and several others through the years then my very close call!!!

Inbed PINKY in your brain!!! Cause if I see anyone without safety gear I will SCREAM and come for you!!! Wear that gear people please we can save a life or more!!

I care about each and everyone of you, we all are in this together!! Be SAFE!!!

Also this thread was on page 4....
I will do my best to keep it closer to remind you all!! You all can help too please!?
I care!!!
Let's wheel, have fun and be SAFE!!

Free bump. My dad is still alive because he was wearing a GOOD helmet when he crashed his motorcycle.

Weekend wheeling for some!!!
Be safe!!! Watch out for yourself and others!!

Wanted to add my $0.02...

I have 3 helmets that are hanging above my work bench that without having been wearing, I would undoubtedly be either dead or a vegetable.

Also remember, helmets are typically a one-time use item. If you're wearing one and hit your head hard enough to hurt, replace that sombitch. The number of folks that I see wearing banged up, old-ass helmets is scary.

Thanks for bumping this. I am also guilty of taking a helmet, then leaving it in the truck. Especially when its hot outside! Stay safe everyone
