If anybody figures this out, let me know what the answer is....

Three men rent a motel room for one night. The owner says it will cost them $30.00 (ten dollars each). They pay him. Later on the owner decides that he charges them $5.00 too much. He gives the $5 to the bell hop and tells him to take it to the 3 guys and divide it equally among them. On the way the bell hop says to himself there is no way I can divide this five dollars so he puts $2.00 in his own pocket and gives each guy a $1.00.

Adding this up: Now the three guys each paid $9.00 for the room, right? ( 9 X 3 = 27 ) add the $2.00 the bell hop kept, that is now $29.00

WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR???????

Dude, paying $5 too much on a $30 down-payment equals $25. Never says anything about $9 being the actual amount they should have been charged.

$5 minus $30 = $25

Plus $3 = $28

and the bell hop kept $2 = $30

Yeah, its just math. Do some equations.
30-5=25
25+2=27
30-3=27
It makes sense to me, but I do math weird.

I totally get what you guys are coming up with for answers, I even came up with it that way. But why does it work out the way it does when you read it. LOL

It's all in how this part is worded that makes it sound funky. They actually got a $3 discount, but the hotel gave a $5 discount. If you change the bold part to say "subtract the $2 the bellhop kept" it would make perfect sense.

Wording it that way essentially adds the "bellhop holdback" to the actual discount twice.

I think my brain just exploded..... :poop: everywhere.

They only got $3 back instead of $5. So you can't include the extra $2 into the equation.

The trick is in the wording, not the math.

Think of it this way, 2 transactions:
1) 3 dudes ultimately pay $27 for room.
2) Refund of $5 is given.

In both transactions, there is an unspecified amount of $2 built into each dollar value, as follows:

1) They should have only paid $25 for room.
2) Refund of $3 is all that is actually given.

So that's what I meant about the "bellhop holdback" being counted twice, on top of the actual (post-discount) room rate. Just some fancy semantics that took the $3 given to the dudes completely out of the equation.

Got any tylenol?

replace the word ADD with SUBTRACT, so 27-2 = 25 = 30-5

You just broke the logic puzzle by saying "add", just a wordplay that makes you think but the trick is they made you think that ADD was the correct terminogy....

by agreeing with their basic stmt, you confused yourself, instead of saying "3 guys each have $1, bellboy has $2, hotel manager has $25, thus equaling $30"

So...."Add" is your culprit

One of the guys who has known of this mathmatical equation for over 10 years has replied with this "You can't change the wording of the sentence, it is one of the only know mathmatical impossibilities that exists due to the wording" The whole purpose of it is to confuse the person its being told to.

I want to know where this hotel is.... that costs only $30 for 3 people, yet is classy enough to employ a bellhop and an owner that admits charging too much.

this must be a very old question indeed.
