to preface this i was riding down us 1 a month ago and what i thought was the clutch slipping the engine started to tach up and the jeep would bog and all the power would die... i replace both the throw out bearing and the clutch and figure thats it. Well finish up the install tonight and took the jeep out of the shop for a little test drive.

clutch feels great but as I tach up over 2k the jeep bogs and loses power. I have no idea what is going on now the only thing i can think of in my limited experience with computer controlled engines is the throttle position sensor is bad or a vaccum leak or something

any suggestions on my next move????

TPS? Throttle position sensor...gently pull up and down on the wiring harness where it plugs in and see if the engine bogs down (shutters). this is under the hood at the rear of the throttle body (think that is what you call it) If you can make it happen here....try using zip ties to pull the wiring in the correct position so it cant do it again...I did that on the SE I had and never had another problem with it happening.

CPS? Crankshaft position sensor (under the jeep)

Either of these could cause a variation of what you describe...or at least they did with me and my 97 SE TJ.

If you shift normally and easy on the gas will it get up to speed?
How about when you get on it hard, does it stumble then?
Could possibly be starving for fuel. Fuel filter of pump.
Just ideas

yeah if i let off idle and ease into it i can shift up to 4th gear and it will get up to 40 or so mph
i can't let off the clutch on any kind of incline or it bogs down...
i guess i'll look into a new fuel pump and see where it goes from there
thanks for the help fellas

I would replace fuel filter first, especially if it hasn`t been changed in a long time.

be sure the check the TPS. on mine, if i was easy on it I was fine, but any "quick" acceleration/changing gears, etc that allowed any "torque" on the engine shift...I would get some bogging.

The last time this happened I was on my way to the mountains....I had gotten to durham and it acted up whenever i tried to pass someone....I pulled over and started checking the connections on things and getting my wife to rev the motor. found the TPS issue....used some zip ties to hold tension on the wires and we were off. Sold the jeep 8 months later with never having another problem.

last night started trouble shooting again

new TPS and new plugs...... no help

from past experiences with some of my other vehicles when i fuel filter or pump goes out the car won't ever start.

I'm going to check the catalytic converter and then i guess i'm dropping the tank on this unit.

I'm lost on how to check from a vacuum leak any advise??

if it had a vacuum leak it would idle rough but to check for vacuum leaks spray carb cleaner around vacuum lines and intake if engine speed increase rapidly its sucking air there.

I would say it is an ignition problem, bad coil, or wire cap rotor button ect.

Will it rev smoothly past 2k sitting still. Putting a fuel guage on it will rule out fuel pump and filter problems without spending money on it and getting covered in gas. instead of dropping a fuel tank spend $30 dollars on fuel guage.

If the cat were plugged the cat would be significatly hotter than the exhuast system behind it and will typically glow, howevr glowing CAT can also be do to raw fuel being dumped into exhuast from a the ignition system being bad.

Sounds identical to when the cat stopped up on my tj. Was the exhaust rattling? Mine was and a piece got turned sideways and blocked like 75% of the exhaust. It would rev under extremely light throttle but if you gave it any it would fall on its face. Happened coming back from URE. That was a long slow ride.

the fuel filter is on the pump and you have to buy the whole pump to get it. was going to change my when i did a tune up when i baught it but it wasnt in the budget to buy a whole pump. just wanted to let you know

thanks for the help i've been working out in CO for a couple months finally got back to apex and the jeep... turns out it was the third catalytic converter
just cut that thing off and got the muffler shop to weld some pipe in place
40 bucks and back on the road:beer:

Really?
Won't that toss a code, aka not pass inspection?

Fuel Filters on a TJ are designed to be basically a lifetime part, they are in the fuel tank, attached to the pump. Just like XJ's (id guess the 97 and above ones anyways). YJ's had inline, replaceable fuel filters however.
