Anyone ever driven an h3? Gf and I probably going to take 3-4 weeks this fall and go to Utah area... I have a low mile 01 xj I could build or the ram I could drive but it's huge. I've seen there's an "adventure package" that came on the h3 that includes locker or lockers depending on year, 4.56 gears and 4:1 tcase... These things are dirt cheap and way more modern interiorwise than an old XJ or even a brand new Toyota. So anyway, how shitty are they? Any other vehicles you'd look at? JKs are out.

H3Ts have a lot in common with the Colorado if i remember correctly. So based on that, you should buy a crewcab Colorado with the factory 5.3 v8, and put lift/lockers/4:1 on it and have something much less homo than an H3, and with more bed space, and probably more interior space if its anything like an H1 or H2. Also, i think @REDLYNER had an H3 and would have much more useful input than I would.

I'd rather have an SUV honestly. And the h3 is definitely the less gay looking of them.

I’ve had 3 H3’s:
-06 first year base model (5 cyl)
-07 Adventure package (bigger 5 cyl)
-08 Alpha with Adventure and Lux package (V8)

The Alpha was one of the best cars I’ve ever owned, the only car I’ve sold and actually missed. I still have this terrible idea of building one into a 4600 class U4 race car.

PM me if you like, I’ve driven them cross country several times, towed cross country, driven them all over Moab, all through the Rockies trails, and all over the 4x4 clubs here in the Carolinas.

Any of them will look gay with you driving so get whatever you prefer :flipoff2:

FUGLY

I am not a fan of any engine that uses and external counter balance shaft to prevent harmonic detonation.
That withstanding, early engines had head and overheating issues that were resolved later in production runs.

You're not wrong. They were never very popular but that's why I asked id really like to know how reliable in inline 5 is. Did you ever have one blow up on you @REDLYNER ?

My 06 over heated flat towing the TJ cross country (Colorado to NC). Had to run with the heater on in the 100 degree July heat on that trip.

Never had any issues with anything else on the 07 or 08 Alpha. I towed, crawled, daily drove all on 35”s and they were fine. The 5 cyl is pretty anemic on 35”s no matter which year you got. The Alpha couldn’t tell it had 35”s over the stock 33”s
