I have a number pretty incredible leaks at my orbital. At the orbital going to the reservoir and coming from the pump. I'm hoping I can reseal everything without getting new hoses. I didn't build this steering set up so I don't know what was used previously, but will this Permatex Thread sealant with ptfe do the trick. I saw lock tite makes some stuff that's like 40 bucks. I've read up on the Teflon tape as well. I'm conflicted and don't want to piss hydraulic fluid all over the shop this weekend. Any tips or suggestions welcome.

Alot of orbitals use orb fittings, i think -8 so you could try to replace the orings. Or any ptfe sealant that can handle over 300* and 2000psi

Thread sealant is made for NPT threads. If you have NPT threads, then you can use a thread sealer compatible with hydraulic oil.

If your threads are AN, JIC, ORB, etc, thread sealant won't do a bit of good. Check fittings and sealing surfaces and make sure they aren't pitted, scarred, or otherwise damaged to prevent sealing. ORB fittings require an O ring. Check this and replace; make sure the sealing surface is free from defects, etc.

If all looks well and you are still getting leaks, it's likely you need new hoses and fittings.

If you're in a pinch and have JIC or -AN fittings, you can get very thin dead-soft conical copper washers that will conform to very minor surface defects. Sometimes they work really, really well. Sometimes they don't work at all, and then you know your fittings are proper fucked and need replacing.

Oh, and make sure you're not mixing fittings that are 37 degree and 45 degree seat angle. I've heard of that happening, but it would be rare.. It's somewhat hard to find 45 degree fittings.

Pretty sure they are -an . I will check for the o ring tomorrow. Where would be my best shot at tracking down fittings and o rings if need be. grainger? I'd really like to be able to see what I'm buying in person as my past online fitting purchases were a failure. Thanks for the input so far guys. Keep it coming

@Fabrik8 where can you get these copper sleeves?

Grainger may have them, or there is also a hydraulic shop right down the road from Grainger that would have whatever you need in stock. Can't remember the name of the shop but they can make any hoses you may need too. I would imagine they are a straight thread O-ring fitting going into the valve and like others have mentioned, the sealant will do no good on a o-ring or AN/JIC flare fitting.

picture's worth a thousand words...

If it is a char-lynn orbital, it uses a straight thread, or a "boss" fitting.

Make sure you havent used NPT fitting in it. Like this...

It should look like this...
