Tools to pull off a Tierod/Draglink

So I am finally going to do the V8 ZJ setup just wanted to know what what tools I should bring to Pull-A-Part/Whats allowed.

I guess 1st of all can I bring my electric impact?
What size socket do I need for the castle nuts?
I know I will need a pickle fork, hammer, and pliers. Can you guys think of anything else I will need? Thanks for the help!

Hey guys! I bent up my stock tie rod on my 02 jeep tj and idk what to do! my options are...
  • Straighten the old tie rod and sleeve it.
  • I have heard a ZJ has beefier tie rods and draglinks and I hear it will fit!
  • Go aftermarket. Been looking into the Rock Kralwer kit!
I know the aftermarket method will be pricy, but if that is the best method I will happily spend the extra money!

Told you dude, v8 zj tierod and draglink, its beefy enough for now, and its like a $13 upgrade.

No point going aftermarket, especially since you keep talking about going FW.

v8 ZJ steering is beefier than stock TJ steering. Depending on how beefy you need, Currie makes a nice aftermarket steering setup

A.) thats Scott that wants full widths! lol If I go 1 tons I would narow the tubes!
B.) Like it says in the thread IF someone makes an aftermarket tie rod/draglink that is worth every penny then why not buy it? I'm always up for the "smart" option! Plus I think mom and step dad bought me the Rock Krawler set up for xmas! I can always return it and go get a ZJ set up and have Chris make my boat sides! :D

My issue with the Currie set up is it's Chromoly so if I hit a rock it won't bend it will just break (since chromoly is brittle) PLUS it's recommended for jeeps with UP TO 4 inch of lift :(

Use the pickle fork only if you want to fawk up the rubber boots. All it takes is a few raps with the BFH on the end of the steering arm. Loosen up the castle nut first of course, 3-4 good hits and the tie rod will drop right out of the tapered hole.

I'd bring a pry bar too, in case the tie rod ball is looser than the castle nut. Sometimes you have to pry the rod to put pressure while spinning the caslte nut off, otherwise you just end up spinning the entire ball-stud with the castle nut.

Thanks for the info! I'll see how it goes!

how big of tires are you runnning? I would worry about the steering box tearing off before I bend a zj tierod. My .02 because my steering has a lot of pops and pings :/

EDIT: saw you drive a TJ, but i think a zj tierod will do the trick, once you feel the weight in your hand you will see the light

we have the rugged ridge kits in stock, we have sold 5-10 in the last 6 months and everyone has seemed pleased $200 upgrades you to 7/8 tierods and 1/4 wall DOM tube, bolt on $13 sounds like a great upgrade for cheap only issue i see you have to go to pick in pull. and all the components are used.

HD TIE ROD / DRAG LINK KIT (FULL LINKAGE), 97-06 WRANGLER, 84-01 CHEROKEE, 93-98 GRAND CHEROKEE, INCL. 4 TIE ROD ENDS, 2 RODS, STEERING DAMPNER BRACKET.

i upgraded my steering box when i cracked the housing last winter! i SHOULD be fine with this new tie rod and IF it does break i will be going after market OR 2.5 tons.....havnt made up my mind yet

just picked up a ZJ tie rod from PAP today, need a new outter tie rod end so im off to NAPA tomorrow!

My question is will the bigger V8 ZJ tie rod fit on the stock TJ draglink?

waiting on the outter tie rod end to come in tomorrow and putting it in for good ( i mocked it up today)
i guess ill let it sit the way it does right now and if anything goes wrong upgrade the draglink later......but then again for $328 id rather spend another $40 bucks or so and just go after market
