I have found several places to buy kits similar to these http://goferitoffroad.com/products.htm, but i am wanting to flip the tie-rod on a 1/2 ton chevy axle. Where can i get sleeves with the correct taper to do this?

You can buy a tapered reamer and ream out the holes yourself. That is what we did on my Ford Dana 44 we put in the front of my TJ.

If the taper goes this direction now /\, and i redrill it to go this way \/, won't the resulting hole end up looking something like this >< ?

you have to use your imagination on that fabulous artwork.

But seriously, if i drill it out enough to have a consistent taper all the way through the knuckle, will the hole not be to big for the TRE to seat properly?

I belive there are some tapered sleeves to bring it back down to the right size if you drill ream out the hole in the other direction but use the same size tre.

Nice art work, I totally understood it.

IIRC, The 1-ton chevy TRE is bigger than the original hole for the 1/2 ton Ford. The only other thing I had to do was add a washer. Google it, you'll see tons of folks who have done it. I even found a tapered reamer that was "free" being passed around on the internet, you just had to get on the list. Not sure how sharp it would be by now, so we just bought one.

youre right, lots of folks flip it on the ford dana 44, but the original reamed holes will be smaller in the ford than the chevy 1/2 ton. it may not be a problem, but the "hourglass" will have a smaller tapered section on the top side with the chevy vs. the ford (ie, you may not get enough depth for the taper). can't speak about the inserts cause i havent used them but they sound like a good idea. just my .02
