Time for a battery

It looks like the old red top from 09 is on its way out. What is the best option for a dedicated trail rig w a winch and the ground work to run dual batteries. I don't need a bling battery, just one that will hold up.

I briefly searched on here and one thread mentioned Wally World because of a no questions return policy.
 
I've always had good luck with just a good old fashioned Interstate. Not a dry cell but just a standard.
 
I run Everstarts in all my vehicles. Was always a die-hard fan of AC-Delco back in my GM days and went on to Interstate's with no problems. Started with the Everstarts a few years ago and haven't looked back. All 4 of my vehicles have them and have not had a problem. Easy in/easy out and outstanding warranty.

Batteries are like anything else (like oil brands or washing machines). Everybody has a favorite and will swear by them, but every brand has gems and every brand has lemons. I've been lucky i guess.

Another vote for die hard platinum which is basically an odessy I believe

Don't buy another optima. They suck now. Nothing like they used to be
 
I just use an advance auto/autozone battery. If it craps out when I am wheeling, there is usually one of those stores fairly close.
 
Optima red tops suck, but I've had good luck with the yellow and blue tops, as they are made by different company that the reds.

I've have excellent luck with the better line at autozone, and with interstate as well.

As well the last two batteries we had gotten we from tractor supply.
 
Was wondering if it was me or not. Seen 2 Red Tops have issues from the factory in no time. One was mine. I now just do maintenance free Interstates if I got a choice.

On side note, Home Depot carries a full line of batteries and pretty much has an entire mechanic section now. My battery dumped on me on a job close to a HD. Walked in expecting possibly a jump starter. Was able to fit exact size and posts with my old one and exchange core.
 
Does anyone have any experience with the Advance Auto house brand AGM batteries? I believe they are made by Johnson Control, assuming the guy wasn't talking out of his ass.

With online discounts that will be the cheapest option. Spec wise, it is right in line w the Yellow top.
 
I use the oriellys agms and love them! I have winched alot on dead motors and they always come back..
 
Exides...they produce half of the batteries we buy these days anyway: interstate, car quest, everstart just to name a few...they even have an agm if you prefer

I have this in "Ghost" and it's been good and I put it through it's paces this summer at Harlan and then sunk it in the soup bowl at URE recently and it's working fine!

Yea you can catch them on sale for about $160 IIRC. It's my understanding that both the Oreliy's and Sear's AGM batteries are made by Odyssey.
 
The oriley AGM is $159 w no discount. I can get the Advance battery, $190 at a 30% discount thus making it less. If oriley is made by odyssey, that seems like the obvious choice. Who makes the Advance one, Johnson Control?
 
O'Reilly agms are allegedly made by Deka.

There's are made by Johnson Controls, along with Auto Zone's. I think some of O'Reilly's are made by Johnson Controls but if I remember correctly most of theirs are made by East Penn or Deka.

I don't know who makes it but I bought the advance agm a couple of years ago and its still going strong. I only drive the jeep every once and a while so it sits most of the time and always has a good spark when I go to fire it up. Also runs my 9k superwinch with no problems.
 
I've hady ol red top load tested several times since I started this thread. All come back w a good battery, but listed as 1/2 to 1/4 life remaining.

Puzzled, I pulled the starter and had it tested. It came back good. Of course no load on it. Put starter back in and it did work a few cranks but now won't start again. I isolated power and solenoid w new cable and wire while it was installed. Same symptoms. I am going to demand a replacement starter tomorrow (lifetime warranty) and report back.

I've seen plenty of starters that bench test fine but won't work on the vehicle. Had it happen to me before I work at Auto Zone on my 4Runner. Really have to listen to it on the bench test to see if it's good or bad.
 
Toyotas starters in their industrial equipment are notorious for that, run a ground cable.from the stater mount bolt to the frame, you would be surprised how.much it helps
