Time Warner modem lease

... is it worth it to buy your own nowadays? I enjoyed having TWC cover mine (after my parents went through 3 or so when i was in college), but this charge is annoying. I had a wireless router & card combo in college that only worked about half the time

This is nothing new, they've been charging new subscribers a $2.50 modem lease fee for the last while around here. They've been doing b/s like this since the company went public a few years ago... Got to show profits even when they lose subscribers...

We've had the same one since I moved here over 7 years ago. 4 x 12 x 7 would equal $336.

We're paying $4.10 / mo. in Durham. I talked to my computer tech and he swore it was too much trouble to buy your own??? He said you had to call in and connect to it, then the life was around 1-2 years due to heat???

I'm now doubting the dude I thought knew it all... Interested to know if anyone else on here went that route? And what's the difference between the cheap and expensive units???

^right. and ^^i understand the cost comparison, but back when they were ~$60-100 for a decent model, going through one a year would be a bitch. (mine lasted for about 1.5yrs, iirc.)

I got one on ebay for 22 bucks shipped. Tried to get it setup and it was going to be a 30 min wait on the phone, I will have to call them again soon.

^^ Exactly what my techie said. He noted sales has a 24 hour phone. But TWC tech dept. don't and sure the lines are limited...

I'm on the fence here. I think I've been on RR for 10 yrs now, on my third modem, each time I got a different kind of replacement. Not happy about the extra $4/month, been meaning to shop around.
My buddy just dropped off his TWC modem after picking up a motorola router/modem. He didnt complain too much about having to wait while TWC authenicated his new modem. Maybe when my router goes out, I'll look into it.

That list is valid for the Raleigh area too, but generally speaking it changes depending on your location. Check with TW first as there are technical reasons they only support specific brands/models in particular areas.

Personally, I'm going to wait until the prices drop - the fawkers selling the modems jacked up their prices when TW made their announcement...

Has anybody bought a modem recently?

Looks like the DOCSIS 2 ones are about $50, DOCSIS 3 are about $75-80...

My problem is that according to TWC, because I have my phone with them, I will still have to have their modem in my house anyway, I just won't have to pay for the modem lease if I buy one. I don't see any point in having two pieces of equipment when one will do, so I'm still paying for it until they come out with a phone/cable modem that I can buy outright.

Also, watch your bill every month. They tried to charge me for equipment that I returned over a year ago on my bill this past month. It was only a couple bucks, but since my bill is "supposed" to be the same each month, I noticed it and called them. Bunch of freakin scammers they are. If Windstream would get their stuff together and offer the same service to my house, I'd switch in a heartbeat.

Look into a separate VOIP service. You'll have to get a box for it (so yes, it's a 2nd piece of equipment) but saves in the long run, almost all VOIP providers are cheaper than the deals from the cable companies.
thats what I'm about to do.

People still pay money for land lines? I didn't know that was a thing. :flipoff2:
I actually don't think I know anybody that still has a physical land-line phone connection to their house, aside from maybe the few that still use DSL. Even my grandmother has VOIP-based phone.

Yes we still have a "house" phone, primarily just for 911 access for the kids and a way for the county to wake us up at 5am to announce they have cancelled school again o_O

I'm pretty sure we were being charged $6/mo for a modem here in Charlotte. I got a zoom about a year ago and it works much better than the crappy thing TWC issued. The setup process is annoying (on TWC's end as you wait a while to speak w/someone) but not a deal breaker and goes quickly once you get someone on the other end.

I wish we had an alternate provider.

Step one: Dig old cell phone out of junk drawer.
Step two: Plug into charger.
Step three: Enjoy your free "we need a phone so the kids can call 911" phone.

Not if you live in the sticks with no cell service.
So I pay Vonage $19/mo
