i recently replaced distributor in my chevy i set harmonic balancer at 0 deg mark before i pulled old distributor put the new one in truck and the rotor button was pointin to number one cylinder tried turnin distributor to set i got it where it will idle in park but when u put in gear to try and drive it sputters real bad i tried settin it with timin light but noticed the mark on balancer is facing all the way at bottom away from timin tab i was wonderin to do i have a bad balncer or wut i cant figure this out to save my life lol if anybody can help me ou tit would be greatly appreciated cause i dont wanna pay someone just to set my timin lol

First you mentioned installing the dist with the rotor point twoard #1, was it set that way before?
The rotor will totate 25-30ish deg. as its lowered in, you need to rotate the rotor back and watch it drop in to place, if its not where you want it try again.

Make sure your vacuume line is hooked up properly. To ported vacuum not manifold vacuum.

If not...Start over and do it by the book....

Rotate the crank to TDC on the compression, pull plug and make sure your building pressure not just on the exhaust stroke.
Once its coming around to the timing mark line it up.
Double check where your dist is pointed.
Also the 'pointed' to #1 is only a guide. If you need to have the base rotated in a specific way to clear the vacuum advance thing than just make sure your plug wires are on the same post that your rotor is pointing to..

All else fails snap some pics...

Sounds like the dizzy is 180 out.

+1

One more thing to keep in mind.
if the motor has ever been changed, Chevy used two different timing tabs and harmonic balancers over the years. if you get them mixed up you will never get the timing mark on the tab.

one timing tab is vertical at TDC and the other is about 45degrees clockwise.

Thanks for the advice i do know when i pulled the old dist the rotor butt was facin toward firewall so your probably right

i tried movin it but that made it worse heres what i get by goin by the book somehow im doing something but cant figure it out its pissin me off

here it is (supposedly) at tdc

lol so wut the hell do i do to get this POS to run

you need to stick a long flat blade down in the hole and turn the oil pump shaft, then drop the dist. in where it needs to be.

timing

forget about the timing mark on the harmonic balencer. pull the number 1 plug and have a friend put his finger on the hole. turn the motor with the crank bolt. when the piston is at tdc it will blow your friends finger off the hole. now set the dest. with the rotor pointing at number 1 on the cap. if you cant get it quit right turn the oil pump with a screwdriver. if its a carbed motor set it by ear. if its a throttle body you can plug in a scan tool and set it by the scan tool.once it is running.

if i pull the valve cover and turn motor til both valves are up wouldnt that be tdc on the compression stroke?

timing hei ignition

the last post will work i would pay no attn to timing mark that take it out of the elemnate that problem stick screwdriver in plug hole very easy turn motor by hand piston is top dead center compresion stroke drop in rotor button tword 1 plug may need to turn oil pump shaft then make sure plug wires are on right i can tell you how to do that if need
