Does anyone know how to put a 4.0 in time? I put #1 cly TDC, point hte rotor at #1 wire. Then you should be on or 180* out. I tryed it both ways and it still wont run. I pulled the valve cover and put #1 at TDC with both valves closed pionted the rotor at #1 wire and it would run But horrible. I then could turn the distributer and no change till it died at a certain point in both directions. And I dont think it can be off by one tooth since the shaft has a flat foot on the bottom of it. It wont go down on onto the block. Any help would be greatly app.

its a tooth off, the flat is the oil pump you will need to turn it to make it line up, it spins freely, your close your just a tooth off sounds like.

I now have it starting. But, it idling real rough and backfiring and has a crazy hisitation. I belive I have the timing dead on. I found TDC with the crankshaft pully and the degree gauge on the the timing chain cover. Set it perfect then reintalled the dist. alining with #1. It then started but had the problems listed above. I made the distrubter turnable by using a dist. clamp from a 2000 XJ. So, with it started I loosend the dist. clamp bolt and spun the dist. a few degrees in both ways with no changes in idle or in backfiring. Removed the dist cap and and using the timing chain cover and crank pully reset it to TDC and ensured that it was in fact in time. Does anyone have any tips, tricks or any other infomation in whice may work. I think I am going to try a new cap, rotor, plugs and wires to see if that will elivate the problems at hand.

Give us some ideas to work with.
Has the engine ran fine until you tuned it up?
In other words are we sure we have a timing issue( sounds like but lets eliminate issues)

You really don't adjust the timing with the dist on an injected 4.0L. You get it close and the computer reads the CPS and does the rest. That's why you were turning the dizzy and it wasn't really changing anything until it was too far out for the comp to compensate. Are you sure you have the rest of the wires/plugs on in the correct firing order?

Yes, It was running great. I didnt do a tune up. The ears on the dist. that hold it down and straight broke off while going down the road. I used a dist. clamp to hold it into place. With the bolt tightend it will not move. I have tryed another dist. timmed the same as the one now and the same results. I have them in the correct order both on the plugs and on the dist. I was told once again that it could be one tooth off either direction. But, wouldent turning the dist fix that if it were the problem?
