Heading down to Savannah ga in a couple weeks. Any suggestions on places to see/stay/avoid.

Word of advice from my brother. If you are downtown and drunk, do NOT try and get a cop's attention by turning him around to ask directions. He will punch you in the face and slam your head into the ground.

And then they'll drop the charges with no real explanation.

And then you'll need two root canals, deviated septum surgery, and your big brother will give you shit for the rest of your life.

That's all I have to offer.

Waterfront is where we plan to stay or close to the bar scene. The wife is not into Bass Pro Shop as I am but she will spend an hour or so in there just to get me in the "mood".

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on Bay St (near the river) several years ago. Had a room up on the 4th-5th-ish floor looking out over the river. Kinda neat to watch the ships come through. Walked all over town. Ate at a bunch of different places down by the water. Pizza & beers at Vinnie's, etc.

Going over St Patrick's day? Place is pretty crazy then.

Best part of the old waterfront is watching people stumbling out of the bar onto the cobblestone road, and watching them wonder why they can't walk on the uneven ground.

Oh, I hear the historic ghost tours are kinda cool

I usually to to eat at the Pirates House, good food (not cheap) and was actually used by pirates in the 1700's

River Street and the historic area are cool. There's the Telfair art museum and lots of really old churches between River and Oglethorpe... that's the 'north historic district'... Forsythe Park is in the 'south historic district'... also cool.

Vinnie Van Go-go's Pizza is cash only, if I remember correctly. We sat at the bar. Plenty of good seafood, if you like it. We did our best to avoid the Paula Deen place. You can get a 'to go' beer some places. Leopold's Ice Cream is where they invented tutti-frutti...

Just got back from a week down there and sayed in a nice VRBO condo in Forsyth Park (10 min's walk to most shops/restaurants) (15 min's walk to River St.)... If you dont have a place lined up yet let me know and i'll get you the lady's contact info. It was a 1BR Condo in the Historic District... approx. $150/night (including all taxes/fees)... kitchen, den, wifi, cable, all you could need....

Pirates House is nice for drinks / lunch (sit at the bar and ask them about the history of the house.. I believe its the oldes in Savannah)
Olde Pink House is a nice dinner just plan on around $80-100 depending on drinks.. Pork Shank was delicious...
Moon River Brewing (only brewery) good for drinks / lunch
Six Pence Pub - best ruben i've ever had
Cotton Exchange (on river street) - excellent seafood

Walk around at night... the lighting is awesome on some of the cobbled streets, etc...

Awesome place, we'll be back...

EDIT: If you're going over St. Patrick's Day... good luck... it'll be too crazy/busy to do any of the above probably...

My wife & I laws are going in April. I'd suggest VRBO. This late will be tough as spring & fall are crazy busy.

Be sure to ask about parking, some hotels are valet only. Thankfully you can walk to just about everything. We did the Savannah Dan walking tour. He was a pretty cool guy & you can have him take pictures of you as you go, unlike the horse drawn tours. Vic's on the River is great, if you go for lunch it's cheaper & less busy. Crystal Beer Parlor is a great bar off Jones St. With awesome food. Huey's has great praline beignets(doughnuts). I had Trip Advisor app on my phone & looked up reviews before we tried anything. Other than comfortable shoes & camera you'll love it. If you buy a palm leaf flower don't pay anymore than $5. They are not allowed to give you a price either.

The Crab Shack going out to Tybee island, Uncle Bubba's is out that way (paula's brother) and sometimes good, some down in Thunderbolt can't think of the name off hand.

Check out Fort Pulaski, it and it's powder rooms are intact, now blown all to bits like Fort Sumpter. Nature/walking trail out there also.

Used to love Williams Seafood but it burn't to the ground.

Chart House (not sure if this is even still there) and Exchange Street Tavern on river front are hit and miss also.

I like Vics but it's always been payed for Gulfstream, don't know the cost, kind'a scary standing out on on of the balconys.

Great! Keep the suggestions coming. We are going next week and will be looking for the history during the day, bar nights. Is it worth staying outside of town? Trying to pinch a few pennies here and there so we can hire a personal tour guide.

Six Pence Pub - best ruben i've ever had
I love a good Ruben. My friend and I try one any time we see it on the menu. McGuires Pub in hickory has the best around here, but Arby's does a good fast food version

I am a history nut so I really enjoyed the bus history tour around town. I always go to Bernie's on River Street. Always had good food there and good drinks.

Yes, you can stay out of downtown. I would pick a local outside of the city itself. We ventured out of the historic distric & just like any other popular southern city, the historic district is nice, but just outside of that protected area, it can get hairy. Last year we ventured out to locate a healthy, organic, restaurant my wife wanted & every place we stopped on our way had large warning signs telling us not to leave valuables in sight. Given the fact that if you spend the $$ to stay there, you can enjoy the pleasure of walking everywhere is really nice. I'd check VRBO & email asking for late notice discounts. People back out & an empty place doesn't pay.

Well we just arrived. Time to go check the sites.

I'll be down there for St. Patty's day. i wont be keeping an eye out for you. i have no idea how to explain how i know a guy from the internet who is named "GotWood". just gonna avoid that situation all together =)

Been there several times. Got married there, named our first kid Savannah.

I highly recommend the 17Hundred90 Inn. We stayed there for the "Haunted" stories. Stayed in "the haunted room" I think it's room 109.

If you don't stay there. At least go for Lunch and have the best French dip ever. Or treat your wife to a most excellent and romantic dinner. Very nice restaurant!

Go to Tybee Island. On the way there are a couple civil war forts that are worth it!

Best part is walking around town with a beer in your hand. Totally legal. They always ask, " would you like that to go?"

Walk the old cemetery.
Drive around and see all the squares.
Do at least one trolley tour just to get the History because there's a ton of history in that town.

Best view in town is south bound on Hwy17 coming over the bridge.

Paula Deans restaurant Lady and Sons IS NOT WORTH IT! So many better places to eat.

Fawking makes me want to go back.

On the beers... is it actually legal, or is it one of those 'look the other way' things? I've been a couple of places like that... where it's not exactly legal, but the cops only make an issue out of it if you're intoxicated/unruly/etc...

x2 on the view over the bridge.

Damn, what a story. Long story short, we left early because wife was smashed off of rum and coke and a drink from the pirate house called artillery punch. After that i lost my wallet after leaving a bar called "Murphy's Law".

Pick up a sharpie marker and a bar hopping tshirt and have the bartender sign the shirt by the pic of their bar. Cool to see how many bars you can hit. If the bartender says someone did that the other day, it was probably us.

My understanding is it's legal, but I never asked a leo to find out for certain.
