tire carrier hinge

Ive seen several built around trailer spindle/hibs as the pivot.
A standard "hinge" isnt going to hold up unless its the BEEF

a hub and spindle from a d44 works well and can lock open and closed

I have a bunch of the Rockstomper style hinges left over.

If anyone wants one, PM me and we can work a deal.

I have a 1" grade 8 bolt. It's been on there since '02 hasn't failed me yet, it holds a 37" just fine, opens smoothly with no hangups.

That setup works well and is cheap.

I've used a good sized bolt with and without a poly bushing insert and both work great. They are MUCH cheaper than the rockstopmer style hinges and work just as good.

I'm not even using the poly bushings, just some thick washers. I take them off 'bout once a year and grease them and all is well. I've had it open at full swing and hung on it with no droop at all.

here's a drawing of mine that I did before I made it.

I ended up making a bigger gap between the carrier and the bumper and using a piece of Delron mounted to the bumper to alleviate any rattles. but that's not needed. I also did not sleeve the hole thru the carrier as it looks on the drawing.

I made my own hinge. I had an old trailer that was sitting around. I cut the axle so that it was just a spindle. then I took the hub and cut off the flange that holds on the wheel studs and where the wheel backs up. ground it down smooth and then basically i had what rockstomper sells. Worked fine. probably some pictures in my supermotors.

just wodnering how this worked... cuz this might be a cheap route... but id think youd need a stud shaft to, to lock it...

Here's some pics, I don't have the tire carrier on the Jeep right now, took it off when I put the summer-time soft top on and just haven't put it back on, but you get the simplicity idea of it all.
