Tire Coverage question

Based on many Jeeps I have seen on the road, I am assuming that coverage out to the edge of the tread is not a requirement in NC. Do I assume correctly?
I am considering various options for replacing must rusty fenders. Poison Spyder tube fenders with the crusher flare is among them. If complete coverage is not required, then I can go with the 3" rather than 6" version. Let more "paint" fly.
Eventually I would get to the rear quarters with the PS panels

looked it up last night. it doesnt say that it has to be covered. it just has to be safe. so if a rock flies up and knocks out the car behind you, RUNNNNNN! hahaha

Inspection guy told me one does not even have to have a windshield. So a broken one passes inspection too.
MA requires tire coverage except on 4x4 vehicles intended for off road use. Doesn't say "only" so my Jeep would have passed without the 6 inch wide flares I put on. But most state troopers are not aware of the exception and don't care about it. So they write people up and make them take a day out of work to go to court over it. So the storm troopers decide what the "law" is even in the face of the written state code they ignore.
One more reason to be glad to be in NC now.
I'm looking forward to going to URE in the Spring to take the family wheeling, camping, fishing and hiking. All in one place. Yahoo! And Striped bass too.

around here you cant even have a crack that goes across the windshield. my dad had to replace his to get it inspected on his ranger. something about it could impare his vision.

I was told you don't need a windshield, but if you do have one, it must not have any cracks that would impede the drivers field of view. Seems like in the 15 yrs I've been in NC, I've always has some sort of crack or chip in the windshield. In CT, the cops could write you a safety fix-it ticket for any crack or chip on the windshield. I moved away before they started doing inspections after initial registration.

I'll have to look up the NCGS (North Carolina General Statute) that covers it, but IIRC, tires are not allowed to protrude more than 1" from fenders. I don't think it's enforced very often tho. (I'm a MP on Bragg and I personally don't write for this, but I've seen it written up and I read the NCGS code for it a few years ago) Cops aren't going to know every single law on the books that applies to every single situation, just the "most common" ones.

Not sure if it's all insurance policies with comprehensive coverage, but I know Mine covers free windshield replacement if it's damaged. If that goes for all insurances, I see no excuse for a cracked windshield. IF that goes for all insurance policies!

just FYI for anyone with a cracked windshield, check your insur. policy.

Mine had that, I figured I'd take advantage of it before I dropped the XJ from comp. to liability only. Now I have a "black mark" on my insurance record for filing a claim, I see it every 6 months on my renewal statement. It was just a rock ding, out of sight, always passed inspection, I should have just left it. I agree though, if you have a large crack running across the glass, hit up the insurance co, just be aware, they keep track of how many claims you've filed.

Hhhhmmm...not sure who your insur. is/was thru, but I asked if it effected my premiums or put a bad mark on my insurance, and they said no. I've not seen anything on my records.

There is no requirement in NC for the tires to be covered, but oddly enough there IS a general statute saying that your rear axle must be, meaning that it is technically illegal to pull the bed off of your pick up and drive around that way. Very strange law there.
