i have thornbirds and noticed how gummed up and slick the centers can become and want to groove the center lugs.

is it worth the trouble? and are these grooving tools widely available or something hard to get your hands on.

i dont want to shell out cash on something i would only use once, so is it possible to borrow a grooving tool from anyone on here?

Yes it's worth doing. I used 1/2" electric conduit. Ground down to an edge and heated with propane torch. Cut like butter and did a great job.

It is worth the trouble.

I'm pretty sure Northern Tool sells a grooving iron, but I think they call it something else. Took me forever to find it on their website a couple months ago and now I can't find it. I'm sure if you call the store they'll know.

get them on ebay for $60 or use a chainsaw.

If you end up buying one keep in mind a lot of places don't list them as tire grooving irons. They list them as heated knives, the most popular brand being Ideal. So "Ideal Heated Knives" would probably get you some results on ebay, google, etc.

Try speedway motors. They have them pretty inexpensive.

I did mine but my grooving iron resembles a 4" mikita grinder. I don't recommend this.
