Well I have a new DD, that is going to be due for a new set of tires soon... Its not really a tow rig but is far from a rock crawler...

So heres what it is..

2000 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer. 4x4 with the 5.4 Triton

Heres what i use it for:

I put about 1000 miles a week on it as a daily driver commuter for my job and runing between residences between North Carolina and South Carolina...

But on the other hand.. with my job, it requres me to run in muddy fields sometimes, and also I love to ride the beach and surf fish, so i need a tire that is going to float that heavy assed thing on the sand as best as possible..

It has a set of Maxxis 750s i think now on it, they have about 35K miles on then and have warn pretty decent, but the slip a bit in the mud and load up..

I like the BFG all terrains, but are they too soft for such a heavy vehicle?

Any educated suggestions would be much appreciated

"I like the BFG all terrains, but are they too soft for such a heavy vehicle?"

Uh, no? Really, no. I've seen them on rigs that far outweigh yours. My uncle and cousin both run them on their FSC tow rigs. My cuz's '85 longbed is used to tow trailers full of logs while the bed is loaded (and I mean LOADED) with lumber. He runs a tree service. They seem to work fine and last a while in this application.

You really need to give more info on what you want. Size type and load you carry.
Just to say BFGs are soft is not true they make load D,E, and stronger.
We had talked about this in the towing section more.
What you looking??? Cost?? Road tire that last 50-60k low to no noise? Or mud, lot of noise and traction?? Load in truck and what you want to tow and carry, weight of your truck trailer and trail rig, total gross would do.
FWI a good tow tire like a load E will not make a good sand tire. Ever thought about two sets. I have run them for years soft big float tires for sand and E rated tow tires. Or Mud for trail rig and AT for sand....

1000 miles max. prob 800 miles on average. sometimes less sometimes much more.

I dont really tow with it, i mean once i get my wrangler built i guess i would tow it to ure and stuff, but thats nothing im buying tires for now, i sold my dd/trail rig and im out of wheeling for a while..

I need something that is great on the road, great in the sand, but will handle a muddy field. I need decent life out of them because id rather not replace them every 6 months.

I will be installing the factory size 265 70 r17... I wouldnt mind going a size or two bigger, i have the wheel well room but honesty dont know what the next size is.

A mud terrain is not an option, its just not praticle for my use. neither is a load range e, because i dont need the weight handleing and the shitty ride

its a business expense, so cost is not a factor if they will last, i have done good on my vehicle budget this year :)

And the reason why i brought up weight is because its such a heavy vehicle

Here is a suggestion, but I did not search to see what size they make these tires in.

My Dad has similar (very..!? what do you do?)tire requirements and runs and is very happy with

Michelin LTX A/Ts...
I have only seen them at Sam's and that was a while ago.

He has gotten 75k plus out of his last 2 sets.
They do good in slick mud. No mud bogger, but they have never sat and spun in an open field, and do well on the land we hunt, which is basically wash out mud roads.

As to sand, cant say. Never seen them tested there.
They are not cheap, and the more popular XCX APT and LTX M/S arent nearly as aggresive

I have the BFG AT on mine. It is an '04 Expedition, same size as yours. I put them on all of my work vehicles. I don't treat them nicely at all, and I usually get around 35-40k out of them. That is, I change them once a year...:driver:

I have put BFG Long Trails on both my DD and my wife's. The wear so far is great I've probabbly put over 25,000 on my truck and hardly notice any wear. Bought them at Sam's for 75 ea for my wifes Grand. They also stop good in the rain. My wife says they ride better than the Michelins we had on before.

I run Pro Comps 285-75-16 on my f-250 crew that I tow with alot and my wifes 4-Runner. I got about 35k out of them on my truck and hers still look new with 25k on them. i'm on my second set and love them. They wear great if you rotate properly and the deal of buy 3 get 1 free is hard to beat. Offroad they do good but like you said I don't take my big truck wheelin' just down some muddy farm roads deer hunting. I run the xterrains on my Bronco and swear by them. With a truck your size if you get 45k on a set of AT's of any type you are doing above average even if they claim to be 50k mile tires.

They are not as aggresive as the ProComps, but trust me. Try the michelin LTX A/Ts if you keep inflated and rotated 75-80k easy.
That is 2 sets for the price of 1...

Im afraid they dont make my size

Im afraid they dont make my size

not sure if you've looked into other sizes...

but tirerack.com offers a 275/60R17 as an optional size for your 265/70R17...

the LTX A/T's are not availble in either size...but thought I'd toss that out there for you...

the BFG Long Trails that were recommended do come in that alternate size for $122/each (at TireRack)...as well as your OEM size for $114 apiece...

I've had the BFG's load range D for 30,000 miles and they have done great.

I'll be getting another set when the time comes. Maybe a 315, I have the 285's now.

Just want to give yall an update one what i did.

I decided on the BFG all terrains... Went to a few of the local tire stores down here and got a quote ranging from 813-888.00 for 4 mounted and balanced...

I personally thoght that was way too freakin much for a set of tires

So i decided to drop down to a different tire.. I went to the local bridgestone dealer and got a price on a set of Revos.. 750.00 mounted and balanced....

Is this what most people are paying???

So anyways i got to thinking, that the tires that my mom and dad put on this vehicle 2 years ago, had worn pretty well, and did do decent on the beach but they just didnt look aggresive.. I checked the records and come to find out they had 45K miles on them.......

I called the place that they got them from... 465.00 Mounted and balanced with lifetime rotation and balance.....

So I ran back home this weekend and bought them...

Maxxis Bravo H/T 750......... And I love them, had them in some mud the other day and they did great... They look like a Mich LTX M/S.....

Just wanted to share what i found out....and what i did. thank you all for your help....
