Are there any tricks to get a tire rod end nut off once the taper starts spinning in the nuckle?

I'm down to setting it on fire.

Did you loosen the nut before the ball joint started turning in the knuckle? If it's just turning from taper wear somehow before it was loosened, you may need to replace the knuckle because the taper is likely damaged. If it loosened after you broke the nut free, you're fine. Some tie rod joints have hex recesses for an Allen key in the bottom, you might want to check. Often there's some way.of holding it through.

If you're replacing the tie rod end anyway, you can cut through the nut and stud if it won't come off any farther.. You'll be replacing all of that, so I don't see the issue.

Yes it was spinning pretty much immediately. I'm removing for replacement. I've already stripped the Allen. I'm liking the just cut it idea. Or fire, burn the whole thing to the ground.

Yep, it sounded like the knuckle was toast when you said it was spinning that easily. That's crappy. Some cars with forged (or cast) aluminum knuckles have a replaceable taper sleeve, but that does not look like one of them.

What's a tire rod?

I ended up sawing it off and ordering a new loaded knuckle. I'm going to have to drive this car till the wheels fall off, put them back on, and drive some more. I've put way to much money in it now.....

I've used a floor jack and block of wood under the tie rod, generating a little upward pressure in the joint to hold it from spinning in the taper.

THIS
Done this a couple of times, always works.

... before I figured that out, I'd always end up getting pissed and cutting it off w/ a cutoff wheel

I always just have someone hold the steering wheel putting pressure on the rod end.
