Tire rubs... what to do next???

I put Granny2 on the ramp (first time) this morning. Twisted up on the ramp, my half-worn 35 SXs are very close to rubbing on the rear, and will rub the front fenders (lower, toward tub) if turning. Due to the double wall of the front fenders, it looks like neatly cutting an inch off would be a pain, plus I really would like to just leave them alone... at least for now. The logical (simplest) answer seems to point toward dropping to 33s which would actually be a plus in all departments except the fact that it is a smaller tire. Another thought is to install an add-a-leaf (maybe Rancho), plus maybe a half inch to the bump stop. Also, I am told, that the add-a leaf would be a big plus toward eliminating axle wrap, which I am sure I will have to eventually deal with anyway. I'm not going to jump into anything real quick, but would sure like to hear what some of you folks have to say. Your thoughts please... :)

WHAT TO DO ?

Don, you know I'm no expert, but I do hope to get my 35s on. I wouldn't go back to 33s, even though, the new trend , is down-sizing. Each rig being different, as will mine, we'll just have to look at all the options, & hope for not too many trial & errors!
Consider, [U prob. did] Wheel backspacing, spacers, body lift, re-do springs, spring shackles, or spring mounts. Have you, or can you, use spring center pin offset? I'm sure more ideas will pop up; take your time, set out there with your fishing pole, [haha] & just look at it. Then sleep on it! Many times when something had me stumped, I slept on it/must have dreamed about it, & the solution came to me. You'll get it worked out!

i would just bump stop it thats what i need to do to mine in the rear
That's not going to help if rubbing at full-turn.

I'd look into wheel spacers...going to be your easiest option, but hacking it up is going to be the most realistic.

I did wheel spacers on my LJ for full turn rub, only "problem" is a lil bit more mud slangin.

Also I have that set of 88YJ fenders in my way you could have if you wanted to test/beat/cut on.

Nothing wrong with a one inch body lift, not noticeable and no need to hack up good sheetmetal.

and x2 on bumpstops

Already got a 1" body lift... don't want any more than that.

I talked to Darrell at Galloways today, plus a couple other pretty reputable mechanics. My question was, "can I get away with drilling another centering hole in the main leaf and slide the rest of the pack, and the axle, forward by about one inch?" The old hole and the new hole would both be well within the clamping area between the plate and perch, and would/should not be flexing at all. All, including myself, believe this should work fine... and it would definitely solve my problem. Any comments on this???

That will work....no real reason why it wouldnt.

Why not just drill a new hole in the spring pad on the axle though and go that route instead of pulling apart and drilling each spring. Done this on just about every Toyota I have ever had a part in building.

^^^ answering the last three comments.... in order as posted...

I won't be drilling each spring... just the two main leaves.

Waggy spring are 2" offset... can only go 1" max due to steering interference.

"offset shim/thing/whatucallit"... looked at a set today, but would only use as a last resort.

Don,

I think moving your axle forward is the best bet too. I can't remember, are the center pins offset at all on yj springs? If all else

fails...I have a sawzall i can loan you...just tryin' ta help ya know...:shaking: You should bring her down this weekend, just so we

can see the progress....maybe even a few idears for ya...

John, I'm almost certain they are centered. I'm still thinking that relocating the center bolt holes on the main leaf would do the trick, but I will definitely ponder over it for a while before I jump. I'm not taking Granny2 anywhere until she is done... no seats in her yet anyway. Everything is clean and mud-free... I want things to stay that way until it's all finished... much easier to work on. :)

Why not just drill a new hole in the spring pad on the axle

Not likely with the solid "OEM" style perch on the drivers side...

If you think it'd work on the pass side perch (kind hard to the see), I have have a single RuffStuff 2.5" wide perch you're welcome to... LMK

UJO's suggestion may be the simplest means to the end? :D

cut what hits...

Due to all your comments, etc. another brainstorm has fired. I will give some details once I am sure it will actually work. ThanX Guys!!! :)

Don I would go to a. I think 33-13.50-15 ltb I know u like your wide tires. But a 34-10.50-15 ltb is a great tire also.
