Will a HP44 and 31-spline 9” be able to handle 37s? They’ve got 4.56 gears, rear spool, front open (for now) and will be going under a TJ with the 4.0 and 5-speed. Just wondering what others have ran with these axles, what broke them, what didn’t.

i had hp44 and 8.8 for a couple years with 38x12.50 and only broke one stock ujoint. front was welded with a 302 and 5.13 gears. never broke the 8.8. depends on how hard you are on it. personally i think you should be fine with a 4.0 and 37s

I broke my front D44 twice. 94 xj aw4, 203/205 5.38's and 36 Irok's. First time broke a u joint on slickrock and the second time an inner shaft on Budwiser.

Im running 39.5s on my 44/9 inch combo. i just got finished replacing a broken mini-spool with a full spool. That being said, my 44 hasnt broken yet.

I broke no shafts in my 44 while I was running 35s. As soon as I went to 37s, I broke a stock inner shaft. Then I upgraded to chromos and they lasted over 2 years with an aussie, 37" iroks, and a heavy foot. When I broke a chromo stub in harlan last summer, I decided to put some one tons I had under my rig.

IF you keep the front open it will survive without problems. If you lock the front then get chomoly shafts.

What he said. Make sure you're using spicer joints as well, if not chromo joints. If the 9" is a mini spool, then that needs to be changed.

It is a spool, not a mini spool. I haven't replaced the u-joints yet, but will before it goes under the TJ.
