I am wondering if 33's are the right tire for my 98 TJ? It is not lifted yet but that is the plan. I think I have found some tires and rims with less than 1k miles on them for a good deal. So wondering if I should get them and sell my stock rims and tires? If so what size lift would be the advisable? What else might i need to do? BTW it is a 4cy manny tranny.

You would be ok with just a 2 inch budget boost on 33s, you will def rub with no lift, check out the wheels youre buying and see if they have around 3.5 to 4.5 backspacing(stick out a little) this keeps you from rubing. I wouldnt go any bigger than 33s with the 4cyl unless you plan to regear

Thanks for the response. So another question. Would I be better off keeping my stock rims and putting the largest tire I can get on it and lifting? I can get these 4 tires and rims for 1k. They only have 1k miles on them and still have the nubs on it. Nice Goodyear tire. Not sure about the rim quality, but I only drive my jeep about 3k miles a yr so just looking to make it look a little more jeepy.

Fellow 2.5 liter tj owner.

What Jason is saying is if the wheels aren't offset enough then the wider 33s will rub the frame when turning no matter how much lifted, offset is called back spacing. I have 3.5 back spacing on 12.5 inch wide tires and it still rubed. I added 1.5 spaces.

I put 33 1250 15s on my wifes old 04tj with a 2" lift. I think the wheels had about 4 in backspacing. Rubbing was not a problem but had to fight the death wobble about three different times (the first time still completely stock)
