I have a 98 xj in need of a new head, this one is cracked. Where are you getting yours?
 
Not sure where to get head but I could recommend to buy some Enginetech gaskets for reassembly. I was told to buy these for my rebuild and so glad I did. Got the from Kanapolis engine service. Both my and a friend have/had Jeeps that did not leak a drop after lots of miles. Really good quality stuff

I would almost rather buy a good casting and have my local machine shop put it together. I'm afraid of poor milling from China!
 
Which casting # are you looking for?
I have a 7120 head sitting in my garage. Piston started to come apart and motor lost compression. Head should be good.
Believe there is something different about the exhaust manifold though from 98. Cannot remember.
I have an 0630 head also but I was planning to keep it for my rebuild.

I'll check the casting numbers when I get home tonight.
 
I got one off a 99 it came off my wife's that put a rod though the block head is fine

Thanks to @BLarkin for hooking me up on a used head 15 min from my house! Dropped it off at the machine shop to have it rebuilt today and should see it after Christmas. Here's a pick of the crack in the water jacket between #2&#3.

I'm getting ready to reassemble this thing and I have a question. Would it be any easier to go ahead and attach the intake and exhaust manifolds before I bolt this head on? Comments
 
Naw..it's not that hard to put them on after (I don't think anyway) plus with it all on there it makes it off balance and kinda sucks to deal with, plus you don't want to damage you gasket..
 
I've never tried that, but I agree with the comment above, that it would probably be awkward to bolt the head down with all the weight on that one side. Impossible? Probably not. Difficult? Probably so.
 
I hate the bottom bolts, and getting anything close to a torque wrench is impossible.
 
Well I finally rotated the motor for the first time today. I waited so long because I wanted to get things clean first and Christmas etc. Upon inspection I realized the cylinder walls are FUBAR. I bought this damn thing to flip now I'm deeper than just a head gasket.

So I guess I'm looking for a donor Jeep. No title and rust can be worked with. Looking for 98 model but will consider other years.
 
Scotch Brite. That looks like surface rust, head been off for awhile? Yes you can install the head with manifolds installed but it's HEAVY. Not that the cylinder head itself is light either. Don't forget that back corner bolt or you'll need to massage the firewall. As far as installing manifolds after, it's not too bad with a 3",6",12" extension, with air box removed.

It's actually pitted and not smooth. I just plan to flip it but I don't want to sell junk.
