I've been toying with the idea of converting the TJ to automatic. A 700R4 tranny was suggested, but the adapters needed makes this pretty pricy.

I found an article for installing a AW4 Cherokee, this would give me an OD, but the wiring looks daunting. (yes Rich, I hate electrical wiring).

What I haven't been able to find out is if the 32RH used in 97 TJ's, also known as the T-999 from my research, is plug and play into my jeep with a straight drive. Does anyone know what would be involved electrically in this swap? If anything?

The 32RH is the TF999 used in TJs w/ the 4.0. An aw4 will work and be the simplest but it will need to be wired ;(

Check this out, it may help.

Someone also makes a standalone wire harness for the aw4, i just cant remember who makes it.
Yes, I saw that sight, may go that route, but lots of scary wiring. Did I mention I hate electrical?

Difference between the T-999 and 32RH is the 32RH has a locking torque converter. I'm still trying to find out, jeep being famous for lots of stuff being plug and play, is that if I can find a stock 32RH from a 97, will the electrical plug into my ECM? Or will I need to do wiring? If I need to do wiring, then I might as well go with the AW4, if not, I'll live without OD. And would it be worth the cost, and less hassle to just go the 700R4 route?

I justed asked a similiar question of a vendor. Here is the information he supplied me:

One option would be our "Bad Boy" version of the Jeep A999 . The price is $1,245.00 This is a three speed automatic, with no overdrive.

Check out this link to get the specifics of the bad boy tranny.

Rob...if it'll help...

I have the FSM for a '98 and a '99 (both used the 32RH) as well as the parts manual for '97-'99...

just in case you wanted to browse through them and look at part numbers, wiring diagrams, etc....

I have the .pdf versions...

Greg

Thanks Greg, I have one for a 98, haven't had a chance to browse through it yet.

I think the only wiring involved is for the electronic lockup. Most people that do a conversion like that wire it to a switch so they can get compression breaking on the trail.

I have an 02 4.0 with AW4 with all the wiring and ecu's for $650 in savannah if you want it. Alos have an np231 stock available.

I might be mistaken but you will also need a computer for an automatic setup as well.

I might be mistaken, but I'm sure that since the almost three years since the last post he found a tranny.....

and it was only 30 months ago.....

Wow, brought this one back from the dead.

BUT if you're still interested in doing this, I've put an aw4 in my ZJ and did all the wiring myself. I could help you out if you'd like.
