Those of you Toy guys who keep up with 4x4wire have seen this trick, but I thought I'd share as I noodle with it.
A few weeks ago, I got my hands on a set of stock TJ coil springs (thanks yellow04  ) and thought I'd try this out.
My '89 4Runner has a set of Superlift AAL springs w/ the AAL leaf removed (b/c the ride was just painfully stuff), and slightly longer shackles. Leaves basically sit on the overload.
So here's what I did... TJ rear springs are short and wide, w the last coil on each end a smaller radius. I cut off about the last 1.5" of one end. Jacked up truck by the frame and let spring hang at full droop. Borrowed a coil compressor, squeezed that bad boy in place, using the shortened top bit to kind of thread into the factory upper bumpstop. Turns out the other end fits *perfectly* around the factory rubber stopper on the bottom.
Here's a pic:

Measured at the rear bumper, netted me around 2".... plus now the springs aren't riding on the overload. Ride is smoother.
Unfortunately it's still a bit stiff over bumper, but I'm thinking thsi is probably my shocks, need something more lenient.

Now that I know the ride is about the heght I wanted, I'll probabl ygo back and slip soem rubber tubing over the ends of the coils, maybe fab a better mount for them.

I already removed the extra AAL leaf from the pack, mostly b/c I kept losing the fillings in my teeth. The remainin gsprings are still more stiff than the old worn OE ones, but not by a whole lot.
