Looking for information and pictures on mounting points for fire extinguisher in a tj, most places I think about mounting it a holder (neoprane or metal latch) I keep thinking , thats gonna fall and bash my head. Throw out some ideas, or how did you mount yours and where.

I want to be able to access the extinguisher inside and form the outside convenantly.

Got one mounted on the floor to the left of the driver's seat and a larger one mounted over the driver's side rear wheel well. Will get some close up pics tomorrow and post them up. The pics I have don't show the extinguisher mounts too well.

I have two of them in my TJ. they are mounted to the roll bar just inside the back window opening. Dont think I could reach mine from the drivers seat though.

this is what i would do.
jason just make sure you can get to it while belted in cause you may be stuck in that seat when you need it!

Jason - here are a few shots of how I mounted my extinguishers.

BC (sodium bicarbonate) FX mounted to the left of the drivers seat as you're seated behind the wheel...

Be careful with those neoprene holders with velcro mounting straps. Being in the industry I know what kind of tests we have to run and pass to get UL approval for an extinguisher bracket. I'm not saying UL approval gives you an indestructible, fully secure bracket, but the test protocol is pretty sound. I've never used one of those neoprene holders with the straps and I won't say anything bad about them without a basis to do so. I just prefer a bracket that has been designed and tested for a specific extinguisher, especially when that extinguisher has the potential to smack me if it comes out of the bracket.

Hope it works for ya. That bracket is not the recommended or UL approved bracket for that extinguisher. Two different companies. If you have any issues with it, your on your own. Neither manufacturer will back that installation.

UL approved or not the brackets that come with a FX/Kidde extinguisher are JUNK!! The first one is plastic and once you release it one or twice it won't latch properly anymore, the metal one in second pic is a little better but the latch is aluminum and will bend if not properly latched. The 1lb BC extinguisher you have isn't good for anything more than a CB radio fire. It isn't rated for class A fires (Normal Combustibles) just electrical and flamible liquids. The best mount that i have used in this application is a spring type universal mount. By far the best extinguisher for the application is a 5lb ABC in a Coast Guard approved bracket. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask me.

I highy recommend the new nitrogen fire extinquishires. No resadue left if used and I keep mine in the pocket behind the passenger seat. I know the guy who distributes them.

Please explain what you mean by "Nitrogen Fire Extinguishers".
Nitrogen is a gas and is a big part of the air you are breathing. Nitrogen will NOT put out a fire. Basically all fire extinguishers are pressurized with nitrogen but it is just to expel the extinguishing agent. If you are talking about a clean agent fire extinguisher such as Halon or Halotron they don't leave a residue but are EXTREMELY expensive and once again will NOT put out a Class A fire and not much of any other fire either. For a good indication look at the UL rating on the label. A good 5lb extinguisher will carry a 4A rating and at least a 25-30BC rating. A same size Halotron extinguisher will have a 0A/10BC rating and cost at least 4 times what an ABC will.

BTW PM me the name of this guy that distributes them. I am well known in my area in the Fire Protection Industry and I always like to meet new people.

If anyone needs a bracket like the one in the jeepforum link let me know. I have several install pics on my samurai, buddy's samurai and our work trucks. I also have them on hand if anyone wants one.

Everything u said is completely Greek to me. I asked him if my car was on fire will it put it out ... He said yes. And when stored in the car temperature changes don't bother it. I forget his name, I'll get a card next time I see him.

If you can post a picture I can tell you more about it. Does it have a hose? If it doesn't leave a residue It most likely won't put out a class A fire. For example, driving on the trail and have to pause in tall grass that touches the Cat. Converter and sets the grass on fire. This is a prime example why a ABC extinguisher is important.

The name of it is nitrostrike. The owner at gulches skip keeps a case of it for wheelers to buy if needed at his park. I'm no expert and don't claim to be but have been impressed with the demonstrations.

It isn't UL listed. Just a hint though, those videos are really obvious that they are in favor of their product...A power extinguisher in this application will outperform a foam hands down. I will get a picture of mine tonight and post for those that would like to see.

To the OP - Sorry if I hijacked your thread. You were looking for ideas on where and how to mount an extinguisher and I kind of went off on a tangent talking about brackets.

LBZ - I wasn't trying to start anything but maybe my post came off wrong. The latch on the metal bracket is 302 stainless, not aluminum and that metal bracket is USCG approved. I know what my 2 LB BC (note, BC not ABC) unit is capable of and what it is not capable of. The fact of the matter is I don't have the room in my TJ for a 30 LB OCU mounted in a vehicle bracket, so I chose to install a small BC unit and a larger foam unit. I'd rather hose foam residue off than clean up dry chemical.

In an earlier post I said I wouldn't bash the neoprene holder because I hadn't used one, but it appears my post to the bracket shown on jeepforum was taken as a bash. For that I apologize. You and your friends have them and maybe I should try one. Since you offered I will contact you to get one. I'm not being an ass here, I would just like to try it out and see what it's like. Maybe I'll jump on the bandwagon.

BTW PM me the name of this guy that distributes them. I am well known in my area in the Fire Protection Industry and I always like to meet new people.

I too am in the Fire Protection Industry and am always looking to meet new folks in the industry. I'll drop you a PM.

Ive got the same kind right beside my seat except I havent mounted it yet, I guess I need to do that some time today or tomorrow. I was also thinking of mounting a larger one to my tool box thats behind my seat.
