TJ Fuel Tank Options

So... help me out here. As far as I can tell, if the fuel tank in your TJ is "in the way"... and you want to keep your back seat... you have essentially three options:

1. Try to thermoform the stock tank to clear the differential.
2. Buy the RCI 10-gallon fuel cell that goes behind the back seat. Figure the tank costs $250, the mounting bracket costs $150, you'll probably incur another $100-200 in fuel pumps, sending units, fuel lines, etc, and then you'll have to unzip the top to fuel up.
3. Spend $8-900 on a Genright tank.

Sound about right?

I think you have all the bases covered. Since you have kids like me an in cab tank is not an option for me. Even if you have it mounted right and the proper return lines on it, it would always be in the back of my head that my kid is sitting next to a potential fire ball.

On another note I may know where a Genright is that is like new and the guy would probably get rid of it to save you some money if you decide to go that way.

Yeah, do you know which tank it is? I'd be interested if it's the medium size early model tank. I think they make a different one for the 03-06 models.

This is in a 98 and its right around 14 gallons which I think is the medium sized one.

Yeah, it should be the medium one. Check on it and let me know if he's interested in selling it.

Thanks.

Check out the rci 2161a (think that is right number) it is a 15gal and will fit behind rear seat 241 for cell and sending unit, not straps. I've been eyeballing that one and the 2191a (19 gal) gen right sells a conversion kit with all the hookups and lines. Going this route you can relocate the tank for less than 500. I plan to do the same in the next few months. GR tank was just too much $$

I bought a GenRight. Actually tried to install it the other day, but the exhaust is in the way. Got to cut it off and add a little S bend to clear the corner of the tank. It's a mandrel bent tailpipe from Rusty's. The GenRight instructions actually warn about this, but I eyeballed it beforehand and thought it would be fine. Turns out that's not the case.

Other than that, it's a really nice piece. Looks like better ground clearance than stock, and boatloads of room behind the axle. Not counting the exhaust modifications, the swap should only take an hour or two start to finish.

FYI on the safety piece of a tank in the jeep- I have a custom one off aluminum fire wall that I had built for the RCI 2161a (tank that fits behind the TJ seat). It helps with noise reduction too.

Sitting in my garage if someone is interested.

What about that cover adds any "safety" factor to running an in-rig cell?
Outside of covering it all up (impeds visual inspection), potentially deflecting a errant rock, spark or cigarette butt... appears it's just "shrapnel"?

Come on...you are smarter than that.

Splash shield?

Keeps fuel from flying onto the passengers in the event of a rupture?

I am confused. I know both of you. Cant imagine a beef between you. Know that Caver knows better...what am I missing?

Maybe :D

There's a hole in the top and it isn't sealed against the tailgate!
My warped thinking is fuel *WILL* splash/spray out of those places, ricocheting off of everything it comes in contact with, if containment fails?
OTOH, if it gets to that point, there might be bigger issues to deal with?

Absolutely no beef here bro, I'm a REDLYNER fan! Envious of what he's accomplished, hell, I bought the same cell & Artec mounts because I liked his so much!
Was just asking the question, not to be malicious or discredit, just playing devils advocate. My apologies to all if it came across that way. I just found out that one of my customers (Tony C.) and Jay are old friends! (the world gets smaller daily)

Dave-

I understand your questioning, but I think you are trying to make it an emergency fuel spill "container", when it was built as a fuel splash shield. It passed some of the toughest tech inspections in offroad racing and covers about 50% more than what most splash shields cover.

Anyone running a fuel cell in the cab knows how loud they can be. This setup helps to quiet it down while also providing a safety splash shield.

:)
