I have a NV3550 in my TJ and from what I've read as far as stock TJ transmissions goes this is the one to have. My issue is every since I owned it it has been hard to get in 1st at a dead stop and it grinds going into 2nd. I did change the fluid and used the chrysler synchromesh as recommended and beleieve it or not it seems to have made the problem worse expecially when it is cold.

I do have a 1" inch trans drop installed becasue i am being cheap and havn't got a SYE yet.

That's gonna be your issue. There's an inner shift boot with a metal ring. With the drop, the shift lever is either hitting or coming close enough to the tub or inner boot ring to cause a little binding. Take your console out, remove the shift knob, remove the outer boot and take a look. Before I went to a SYE, I had to grind out my inner boot ring and tub to free up the shifting.

I had a feeling that maybe the issue I was just looking for confirmation before I started tearing my center console apart. I guess I’ll quit being lazy and just pull the boot apart and try adjusting it.

Also if you still have the rubber shifter boot it can make shifting into second even worse with a drop. I switched to the leather boot that later TJs use when I had a drop and it helped a lot.

Also switching to Amsoil quieted mine down a lot.

You hit the nail on the head! It was my top rubber boot causeing the problem. It is very stiff and bunches up when I move the shifter left to get in 1st and 2nd gear. I took it off and the it shifts fine, very notchy but no grinding.
