tj suspension on a yj?

Now this is just a thought so try to keep the jump down my neck to a minimum. Now a tj and a yj are pretty much the same physically minus the suspension. So has anyone looked into the possibility of just welding stock mounts into a yj? This is more curiousity than anything. Links?

this is a lot easier said than done....the only reason i know this is because a buddy of mine and i were considering doing this same thing to his yj.....

first you'll need to change out your axle setup by either grinding off leaf pack perches and rewelding coil perches on, along with control arm mounts and shock tabs.... OR just get a set out of a tj and just swap them in....

then you'll need to address the coils and if youre going to run stock setup or go bigger.... bigger is a deffinate with this swap anyways just because...

if and when you run a 4.5" or bigger lift i would seriously consider long arms for controls arms becasue the ride is so much better and you'll get better performance out of the rig anyways....

this address' where you will have to mount the control arm mounts on the unibody... this is again easier said than done... welding to the unibody is risky at best considering it's such thin metal... a bolt on kit from just about any lift kit provider is your best bet....

you will also want to make sure that your driveline matches up to the setup... if you use the factory axles you should be fine...just check your drive shafts with the swap or not for any issues with length or any binding that could occur....

also if you swap in a set of newer axles double check the lug pattern on the wheels because they might vary slightly....

there are a lot of issues you can run into when doing this swap so just be sure to plan ahead and weigh every option considering if it is going to be a mall crawler or a true 4x4 seeing dirt every weekend or so....

hopefully this will help a little and not throw you to the wolves.... if you have any questions just let me know and i'll try to help out as much as i can!!!!

CHEERS!!!!

well YJs nor TJs have unibodies... but as he said its easier said then done...

i think it is black diamond that makes a coil spring conversion kit for a YJ that basically does just this....

the easiest way IMO to do this would be to figure out what axles you wanted to run... the get and mount long arms, just as you would do on a TJ, and run coilvers or air shocks...

yeah he's right i wasn't thinking when i said unibody

my bad i was thinking about something and writing at the same time!!! oops...

There are a few companies that make a coil conversion for a YJ. They are a little pricey, but include everything you will need. Let me know if we can help, we sell all the parts needed for the conversion or the complete kits.

Skip the BS. Go with the rock krawler 8"/ stretch kit if you're into the pre-fabbed kinda stuff... and have about $4k extra.

it was just more of a general curiousity than me wanting to even look at it. Right now I'd just kill for some 5" bds and a freaking sye so I could actually wheel my pos

What are you trying to do with the jeep, coils may be the answer but is it worth tripling your cost for the conversion, spring over YJs do very well, or maybe both, spring over the front and link the back, stablity and great flex, all the kits that ive ever seen to convert a YJ to coils was absolute junk, or a rip off. Contact me for more, its not worth blowing the money for something youre going to be disappointed with, esp. a kit

If you're gonna do it, the best bet is to ditch the stamped steel bracket crap and have someone make you a link suspension..

Next notch down would be some of those pre-fab setups like the 'rock krawler' stuff mentionedabove (Not partial to any brand, I have no idea which pre-made setup works better)

We have done the Clayton's Offroad coil conversion kits and they work very well. If I can help just let me know. I sell a ton of their stuff and all my customers have been extremely happy with the quality.

The ProComp Coil Conversion kit(I assume this is the one Alex is speaking of) is definitely garbage.

No trust me I won't be doing any of those. If I was going to do anything it would be a custom 4 link or just go soa. I just had one of those "I wanna know" moments where curiousity peaked its stupid head.
