co-worker is looking at a '97 4.0L auto TJ. Anything to look out for, or maybe make it less desirable being the first year of production?

I've had a bunch of them on the lot, first year for airbags, Dana 35 on all them I think, some saharas might have had the 44, make sure motor is good, had a couple around that year with a knock from a cracked piston skirt. Multi function switch with controls turn signals and such go bad, as well as the cluster goes out some, whole cluster plugs in electric. Look out for rust on the back, normal stuff. Overall I think they are good with the 4.0

Yes they do, I think 2001 was the first year of the two piece manifold

The dealer did replacements on any manifold that cracked. Replaced with ones that have the flex joint in the rear tubes.

The A/C vent control for hot and cold breaks on most of the early ones.
