My girl just got the 4S and we cannot figure out a way to get a toggle for the wifi. I know that its not that many steps to turn in on through settings, but my girl is making a big deal about it and I can't say anything because I have a toggle on my SG3 (android)

I want to accomplish this without jailbreaking the phone....any help here?

I am looking for a single toggle that only controls wifi. So All that has to be done is to have a homescreen widget that you can tap to turn wifi on and off without going into settings and turning it on and off.

check this out...

Also, Iconproject from the app store....killed with IOS 5.1.1, but I bet they'll have a workaround/fix for it sooner than later. It was rated high until it quit working.

Edit: see that the iphoneza iconsettings has been killed by 5.1 also...

I sure wouldn't do it, but you can downgrade firmware to 5.0 without a jailbreak:
It can be done. You have to put the iPhone into 'Device Firmware Update' (DFU) mode. Basically it powers up the iPhone but does not start the boot loader and operating system. You will lose all your content, as you are re installing the full os and firmware.

So go get the 5.0 iOS file, and then follow the steps for DFU mode. I included a link about DFU mode and then a google search for the topic. Plenty of posts talking about how to/ when / why you would do it.

Have you tried switching the toggle for the wifi? turn it on? when you do that, your options become available. pretty straight forward?

Yeah, I got that. I am looking for a Home screen button to toggle wifi on and off. Its really not that big of a deal. I seem to be finding that maybe with the next update of IOS, apple will have adressed this issue.

Are you possibly wanting to get rid of the notifications that keep asking if you want to join this network, or join that network? Those are pretty fawkin annoying, but you can turn that off with the toggle at the bottom of the screen.

If you leave the wifi on you won't burn your data package when you step into a wifi network you have saved.

I guess I've not had a any other kind of smart phone nor a home screen wifi toggle, so I see no need for it. and 3 touches of the screen has your wifi off/on. Out of curiosity, why would you want it off so often that you need a home screen toggle?

Because running the wifi radio decreases battery life.

Is there a way to toggle the wifi radio on and off based on your location? Set it to come on when you get home, turn off when you leave?

I use my home screen toggle all the time. I only want the WIFI on when I am at home, and sometimes at work. sometimes i *might* want to turn off the wifi at work to bypass the facebook filter..... i definitely hate driving down the road and having every available WIFI network pop up and ask if I want to connect. Like shawn said, leaving it on shortens battery life. The toggle is the shit and i love not having to navigate menus to do something I do multiple times a day. I just upgraded to Android 4.0.x, an they have a sweet toggle bar widget. I can flip wifi, bluetooth, GPS, sound and screen backlight off, all from one widget on the home screen.

good points. Again, I guess that's not a concern of mine as I'm not filtered at work. As for Battery life, even with heavy use, I can go 2 days without charging. Still plug it in every night though. but I don't sit around and watch videos all day.

Also , turn off your locations services. you think Wifi is a drain? Location services is a big fawkin hole in your battery!

I've never seen an impact from location services. Turning it off breaks 95% of the goodie in having a smartphone, anyway.

Constantly seeking and grabbing location as well as the wifi "ask to join network" constantly looking. I saw a drastic change in battery life once I turned that off. Guess I have the opposite mindset. If I want it to find where I am and use that info, I'll turn it on and let it locate.

I.... that must be an Apple thing...?

On android, I hit one button, and it shows me the weather radar around my current location. I hit another button, it tells me how long it will take to get home from where I am right now. I hit another button, and it shows me where my wife is. Hit another, say where I want to go, and it shows me directions to get there. None of that works with location services turned off, and none of that has anything to do with connecting to a wifi network.

I did get the opportunity to use an iPhone 4S for a few hours just a couple of weeks ago, and I've got to say... they seem pretty primitive. I think the "OMG iPhone!!!" stuff comes from people who either never had a smartphone before or came from Blackberry... in which case, the iPhone is a big improvement. But I guess I'm not surprised that location services is sort of a mess.

He's not the one getting g-chats asking why I'm on S. Saunders and is it to 'get a fix'.

(sometimes the location thing isn't 100% accurate... it doesn't update constantly)
