Well I was working on my motorcycle this evening and it started out a pain. I need to remove my front so I could get some new rubber. But the stand was too tall, so I had to put the front tire on a 2x4 the be able to get the stand under the forks. Well that went well, as well as I had hoped. So I start getting everything ready to start to remove the tire, but I didnt have the allen wrech big enough (24mm) so I had to make a trip out to cyclegear to by the correct tool. I come home and get the tire off but now the caliper are in the way. I get them off, but now the wheel cover/faring is in the way. I get the left side off just fine. I loosen the bolts on the right side and just unscrewing the handtight nuts and....... the bike falls over on me:kaioken:. Well, all is well, so I thought get everything back on the stand the tire out.... but one of the rotors is FUBAR. Warped like crazy... and those derned things arnt cheap.... 190-500:flipoff:
 
i feel your pain man, sometimes things will just NOT go as planned, i think we all have days like that, and i know, they blow
 
Well it esp. blows b/c I could eather get axle shafts or a new rotor... just got the cash for them
 
Sounds almost like the "brake job" I did on my mom's car that was supposed to be pads, then needed rotors (warped), then needed new unit-bearing assemblies (with 100k they were really loose, which I believe warped the rotors), and that required a special socket purchase. The $80 pad job turned into nearly $600 by the end of the weekend. Dare I say I am glad it wasn't my money.
 
my tranny swap, broke 2 exhaust flange studs, broke off the easy out, broke one manifold mounting bolt removing exhaust manifold. luckily bolt came out, tracking down goofy GM hardware $uck$...
 
While doing a brake job (I hate drums) on the rear of my Z28, I shoved a screwdriver into my eye socket........sometimes life laughs her a$$ @ us!
 
I had to put upper and lower ball joints in my CTD last night...man that sucked, I looked like a coal miner when I was done. working on your own stuff sucks after working on everyone elses all day.
 
The wife makes me clean up before I go anywhere with her....and it's not till later that I notice I have a greese streak on my face somewhere. :shaking: I think she neglects to point it just so she can laugh at me later.

Sounds like you learned the hard way about how NOT to work on a motorcycle.

1: the rear needs to be on a pit stand first, so it won't fall over. (Sounds like you may have done that, but if so, proceed to #2)
2: you put the stand under the forks and then rock it into place, lifting the front tire off the ground in the process. Make sure the wheel is pointed inline with the bike.
3: the calipers come off first, before anything else. hang them with some bungee's through the mount bolt off your clip-ons. don't hang them by the hose.
4: There shouldn't be any need to remove a fender to change a tire. Never had to remove one on any bike I've worked on..
5: If the forks have both the axle spindle nut AND pinch bolts on the bottom of the forks, there's a specific sequence those need to be tightened and torqued..
6: Check the message boards for used rotors... people are always buying those wave rotors...

x2...ball joints...had to do it in all of my CTD's...now the new 02 has a popping in the front when braking in reverse...what's one more time?

Luckily I don't work on trucks all day anymore...maybe that'll make it more bearable...
 
I am not a real mechanic, so anything I do to a vehicle usually takes all day, makes me bleed or cuss, or usually both. Add that to the fact that im working on the rocks, in this million degree weather and humidity....I could snap at any second.
