OK Dads... our son is getting a tonsil/adinoidectomy Wed.
I know all the medical stuff - but I'm wondering what sorts of things to expect to deal with afterwards, both with the Boy... and Mom...

Pretty common medical procedure, but some minimal cocnern about recovery b/c at the age of 4 he's only 30 lbs...

I have been thinking about doing this for quite some time now....I also have a deviated septum but no sleep apnea....Im also not 4 yo either.

Definately the ice cream and jello. Your son will probably handle it better than you guys will.

Does he get Strep throat alot is the reason. our daughter samantha may get her tonsils done if she continues to get strep.
Good Luck Dave and also to your little man as well.

Just had this about a year ago with my then 7 year old.
Without putting a lot of thought into a long post some random thoughts.

- Its a routine surgery, but mom is gonna freak a bit hug her a few extra times and re assure her the doctors know what they are doing.
- Dont rush it afterwards even though he will probably be starving. (it took weeks to get regurgitated Wendy's Frosty out of the car)
- Everyone says ice cream, but honestly by the time my son could eat ice cream he was ready for solids. For day 1 and 2 jello and freeze pops were about it.
- Cold stuff helps (my son just added that)
- Lane had to have one side stitched and the other cautherized (whatever you are the doc burned shut) that took a while to heal...apparently depends on the size of the veins feeding feeding blood to the tonsils.
- And be prepared for talking or crying to hurt a lot.

Oh yeah... makes dad feel better....son not so much.

Our daughter had this done last fall at her 3 birthday. The worst thing was right after in recovery. Seriously tell mom its ok and the little one will start feeling better in about 12 hours. Coming off the anasthesia is the worst thing. Good luck!

My nephew had his removed about 2 month's ago. He slowed down for a little bit, but his parents never gave him the pain medicine because he never complained about pain.

I had my tonsils &that little thing that hangs down in the back of your throat cut out about 3 years ago. All I can reall say about it is PAIN, & thank god for PAIN pills.

If I had a choice I would not have them cut out that hanging thing from my soft palet, when I would swollow food or especially liquid it would go down the wrong pipe. Had to learn all over again.

They say it's easier on kids. I say bull shit, hurts like hell no matter how old you are. I do think kids heal quicker.

I didn't eat ice cream, Cold drinks & chicken soup at room temp.

I have been thinking about doing this for quite some time now....I also have a deviated septum but no sleep apnea....Im also not 4 yo either.
I had a deviated septum and my sinuses were 95% blocked. I didn't have sleep apnea, just sinus infections that would never go away. Dr. Jarchow in Concord is the man!! He fixed it all. He roto-rootered my sinuses and the deviated septum he took out, broke it, straightened it up, and put it back in.

As for kids and tonsilectomies...He also did my daughter's tonsils, adnoids, and ear tubes. She was pitiful for a couple days. And the smell was terrible because they caulderized it (not sure if that is how you spell that or not). Just give the kid anything he wants, it is very important they don't get dehydrated.

I already had the surgery once and the guy didn't fix it....The next one I am going to have them break the bone and restructure it.

I need to get mine taken out. I have sleep apnea but I get mixed answers from the doctors. one says leave them in and the other say take them out :shaking:

X2!!!!

that's something they don't really prepare you for. My Middle girl went in for Tonsils, Adenoids, and Tubes in the ears, They said, she would be a little fussy afterwards.... UNDERSTATEMENT! Never realised how hard it could be to hold onto a child that didn't have an idea of what was going on and fought you. WOW! I sat there in the chair with her in recovery for a couple hours. they gave her meds to make her sleep it out. All said an done that was the worst part.

He'll think his singing career is ruined.

But no worries, his voice will come back in a couple of days.

I'm 44. Had mine removed when I was 5. Don't remember much about it except that ice cream hurt more than it helped. I don't remember having a lot of pain and I don't have any lasting issues except maybe I don't get sick much.

Well no more tonsils, they ended up leaving the adenoids - he actually had them removed 18 mo ago, aparently the gre back (yes it happens) but aren't really a problem.
Hangin' at the recovery room now, yeah coming off the anesthetics is a bitch.

Due to his insanely small size and propensity to not eat anything already, the plan to is keep him overnight for observation... so Mom gets to sleep in the oh-so-comfy room chair "bed", I get a night a home alone.

I was 4, and don't remember the pain, but remember them putting me in a crib! and not a "big boys bed"

Well an update, recovery not going so well...
As I mentioned, he's like crazy small for age, mostly b/c he refuses to eat/drink, like to apetite... ever... no matter hwat we try/do... proof of the old saying "only 2 things you cannot force a kid to do, eat and poop". So he's chronically dehydrated anyway.
Well surgery Wed, they kept him until Thurs eve b/c he wouldn't drink anything, had to get IV fluids and steroid, finall ysent home... then he puked it back up, then again this AM several times. By mid morning, so dehydrated he was completely incoherent, had to take back to ER, checked everything OK had to crank in the fluids. Checked in for the day, after 3 bags IV fluids this evening finally back to a semi-normal state, still refusing to drink, at least got a popcicle in. Hopefully tomorrow (fingers crossed) he'll drink on his own and can come home again.
So annoying not being able to tell how much is b/c of throat hurting, vs just "not wanting too"/being stubborn.

Thurs afternoon he did say "I lost my voice, where did it go?" that was pretty funny. We went looking under the bed, chairs, table, blankets for him, that made him laugh.
