Tools stolen in Western NC

Saturday night, my dealership was broken into. I lost about $8,000-10,000 worth of my tools, as did 3 other techs here. The cocksuckers stole one of my dealers used trucks, and rolled our roll around tool carts into the truck and hauled ass. Thankfully they did not attempt to steal our tool chests.

Be on the lookout for black Cornwell 4 drawer roll aound tool carts. Mine was all stickered up with 4x4 related decals.

This put a major financial impact on each of us especially with Christmas coming up. Luckily I am able to use many tools from my homeshop in the meantime, but others are not as lucky.

My homeowners policy does not cover this because they were not stolen from my personal property (home).

My dealer is in Asheville NC, so be on the lookout throughout this area...

Thanks,
Jody Treadway

thats what i was wondering, shouldnt your dealer have coverage on the work area????

by dealer, do you mean car dealer?

Our tools are our responsibility. Had the dealership had tools stolen, then the dealerships insurance would have covered them. But if they are our tools, we are responsible for them...

It is a Jeep/Chrysler/Benz/Mazda/Mitsu new car dealer BTW.

That S*CKS !!

I feel for you.

I had a tool chest (about $10k worth) stolen from a job site a couple years ago. Right in front of the building at lunch time. Even got the bastages on the security video and couldn't do anything.

And no insurance won't cover it.
IF you can even get coverage for a box at a workplace, it is so expensive you can't afford it and even then, forget replacement cost coverage.

Will keep an eye out and post it on a couple other boards for you.

Good luck.

That sux! The dealership should do something to help you out. Afterall, it was their building that got broken into. Your tools are there for you to do your job. Evidently, their lack of security led to the loss of your personal belongings. Not only that, but the loss of your belongings effects your ability to do your job which in turn effects the dealerships ability to satisfy customers. I don't know if they legally obligated, but it just seems that if they were decent people that they'd do something to help you out.

edit: Well, there ya go, looks like someone else has had a similar experience. Best of luck to ya! I'd still try to get the dealership to do SOMETHING to help you out...

we offer our techs tool insurance just for that reason. if they opt to pay than they have a separate policy on the tools thru the shops carrier. It costs something like 1.50 a week and covers up to 15 grand IIRC.

I'll keep my eyes peeled as well, check ALL the area pawn shops, thats where they will most likely end up.

I hate to hear that! From what I've gathered from friends that work for dealerships, they don't look out of the employees at all! They are always talking about getting screwed unless you're good friends with the service writer. I can't believe that the garage wouldn't help.

Mechanics are my best friend when buying another car. I always skip the salesman and go to the garage, they'll tell me what car to stay away from and which they see the least of!

I'll second that. Dealerships could give a rats @$$ about the employees. Especially the techs. Been there done that. Won't ever go back (to Leith at least).

Sucks about the tools. I know I'd be pissed as hell if that happened to me. Hope you catch "em and hang 'em by their tiny little nuts!

Thanks for all the support folks. Currently I am awaiting more info from the Police. They apprehended a lady driving one of our stolen cars. The theives stole a Forrester, Mercedes and an F150, which they used to haul our tools away in.

It is agreed amongst us who had tools stolen that a lack of security aided in the theives ability to take our stuff.

Between the 4 of us who had tools stolen is an accumulated 30 years invested at my dealer, including over 7 for myself. I guess it is their turn to prove loyalty to me...

Thanks again.

i know nothing about procedure here, but i would be pressuring the hell out of the dealer, that is complete bullshit on their part

im down here in Hickory, I'll keep an eye out for em..

any License plate #'s on those vehicals? What about pictures of the tool chests?

I am close, and already put out a few feelers. I would let all the tool guys know, check pawn shops all around, flea markets, trade lots so on. I will let you know if I see or hear of anything. Oh a number I could call if I were to see them somewhere would be helpful.

Bummer, it happened at my shop several years ago. They stole most of the tools and 8 cars from in the building. All the cars were recovered, none of the tools. We stepped up and replaced our techs tools at little cost to us, lots of them we simply claimed as "shop owned" equipment. Hopefully your dealership will step up and do the same. Good luck, I know we are a long way from Asheville, but guys stop by our shop all the time selling what we expect to be "questionable" tools, I'll keep an eye out.
