It is time for new brakes on the tow rig. It is a 1996 2500 Ram, disc front drum rear. Is it worth the coin to upgrade to EBC rotors and pads, or just pads? Auto part brakes good enough?

Check rockauto. I got a set (front and rear) of powerstop drilled and slotted rotors and pads for under $300 for my wife's DD. Stops so much better now.

EBC rotors and pads are worth the coin.

What is better about the rotors, other than marketing?

I'd do drilled OR slotted. Not both and preferably slotted. Drilled and slotted rotors have less surface area for the pad to grip. A good set of pads will make all the difference.

Ended up going with EBC yellow stuff pads and EBC rotors

When it was time to replace the front brakes on my Ram, i went with the premium rotors and pads from Napa. That was a few years or so ago. I have been very happy with them.

I used the EBC pads and rotors on suburban. I thought they were a lot better than the OEM. I would follow the break-in or bedding instructions

Where did you buy the EBC parts from?

Guys, you are missing the obvious. REAR DRUMS! Convert the rear to disc and leave the front alone and be amazed how much better it stops.

Or buy some 17" wheels and put third gen brakes up front.

Big enough that they fill a 17" wheel.

I did a little research and the '00-'02 2nd gen is a direct swap to the 3rd gen as long as you have 17" wheels, the older 2nd gens take some more mods for them to work.

I am going to stick with my upgraded rotors and pads and consider getting a universal rear disc setup as there are no specific D80 kits.

Just need to give the rear some more pressure, more than likely. The split is heavily biased to the front brakes. Drums stop great. They have far more surface area too, but that's all a moot point if they can't cool off.

What will you do for a parking brake with a rear disc swap?

Do they not use the same calipers as the stock 2nd gens?
I quickly scanned that cummins forum link, and it states that they use the same calipers, but the caliper brackets are different.

I'm not sure how much truck stuff they carry in stock, but I've got lots of stuff for my collection of Subarus from KNS Brakes in Raleigh. I'm sure they can probably order whatever you need.
