I'm leaving tomorrow around noon and going to Harlan. I've towed over the mountain before on 26, from Asheville to Johnson City, when I had a ram 2500 Cummins. The last few times I've went to Harlan, I've took 40 to 81, because I've got a 5.7 Tundra that I tow with now. Has anyone took the 26 way over the mountain with a 1/2 ton gas truck, towing their rig.

I'm thinking about going this way tomorrow, just wanting to hear from experience from who have done it.

Yep, just let it rev and you're good. I’ve done it with an 06 Ram 1500 with a Hemi. You won’t hurt it by letting it rev high where it makes its power. Heading the same direction tomorrow in my gasser and when I hit that big hill on 58 coming out of Duffield I’ll be revving 3500-4000 the whole way.

No big deal.

I've only driven that hill on 26, never towed but just let that thing eat and keep your revs up and watch temps. Same thing with 58 out of duffield but that's a much shorter climb than 26 i think.

I’ve been promoting goin that way for while now but few seem to try it.

We started going trough Big Stone Gap a couple years ago because of that hill and love it. It adds 15 minutes and is a peaceful drive. Plug you get to go through town which is neat to see.

I’m not against another route, but the hill has never been a big deal to me. I actually get a kick out of climbing it. My truck even with my camper on the back and towing the Jeep does great so I’ve never considered going another route. Now if I were to haul a gooseneck with my camper and Jeep with my current truck, I’d probably consider another route as I’d be at max towing capacity and that hill would probably be a struggle.
