I know this is a newb question, but would it be safe to tow a 85 toyota truck w/4.3/th400/208, toyota axles, and 37s.(i have no idea what it weighs) behind a stock 02 4runner 4x4. I know its not the best choice but id like to know if it will be safe and work, or if i should start looking for an inexpensive tow rig. I would be towing to places on the east coast like tellico.

Any advice would be helpfull

Thanks

No it won't be safe. The wheelbase and weight of a 4runner would have a hard time stopping a trailer or flat towed trail rig. It would pull it, but like everything the problem is in stopping. Look around for a cheaper 3/4-1 ton truck to handle towing duties. I have towed uhaul trailers with a 4runner, but once loaded even they were a little on the unsafe side.

I think a 4-runner has a shorter wheelbase than a Tacoma even?

You're pushing it, even with an aluminum trailer and a seasoned driver with many years of towing experience behind the wheel.

While I don't think you necessarily need a 3/4 ton, a 4-runner isn't your best bet.

We tow a sidekick on an older tandem axle trailer with lots of steel in its construction with a v8 03 4runner. It tows it with no problem and stops suprisingly well.

The newer 4runners should be ok but trailer brakes would be recommended.
