i knew the input shafts were different in a W56 and a G52 but are the bellhousings interchangeable. arent they considered the small nine bolt pattern. no one really says that they are the same but strangely have the same bolt pattern, or does the pattern mean the block instead of the trans

They are interchangable ....I'm pretty sure

OK, well, if the bellhousing will interchange, then the transfercases must not. there's no way it can be this easy. its my truck, somethin's got to go wrong.:popcorn:
oh and what about the release fork, use the one that goes with the transmission or one with the bell (or does it matter)

What are you trying to do, just swapping in a W56 in place of a G52? That's a direct swap. Nothing extra needed.

i wound up with a w56 that the bellhousing was shattered and the input shaft was bent. i was curious as to swapping parts from the g to the w because the bearings in the g are almost shot and i know the w is good

I doubt the input shaft will fit as i think the bearings in the W are bigger. But I don't know for sure.

yeah i know the shafts were different, i had to order one. i was just to get the bellhousing riddle clear in my head. but what about the transfer cases? is there more than one forward shift case cause the shifter looks like its in a different spot. (i just dont want to have to redo my dual case setup) like you said rattlecanpaint, i just want to pull the tranny, swap bellhousings, bolt it back to everything, and enjoy a much quieter ride. i just want to be sure before i go yankin stuff out, because its easier to ask (and be flamed) than to pull a transmission.

I don't think there is more than one forward shift case. I think though, if you're going to the w56 you'll have to go with a top shift case right behind the trans. When I swapped a g 52 for a w 56 I had to cut the hole in the floor bigger and get bucket seats because the w56 had a top shift case that was farther back. (The truck had a 2wd bench seat in it when I bought it and it didn't have the cutout for the transfer case shifter was why I had to go to buckets.)

well, if all who responded are correct (and they usually are) i'll be swapping them when the input shaft gets here. i'll let you all know what the outcome of this conglomeration is
