I'm having some charging problems out of my 88 2wd 22r toyota pickup and just wanted to see if anybody else has had any other similar problems. I was running some errands the other day and stopped at a store, came out 30 mins later and crank it and the Charge light is on, turn signals and gauges are not working besides the speedo, and it is idling high especially when it's in neutral. I figured the alternator was going out, I took it to Advance and they checked it out and said yea it was the alternator. So today I take the alternator off and take it to a guy that rebuilds them. He takes it apart and checks it out, hooks it up to a machine and can't find anything wrong with it. He says it's good. I bring it home and put it back on, clean the connections to it, check the fuses and they all look fine. Crank it up and still the same. Anybody else had this happen to their truck or have any suggestions before I take it to a shop?

Brake light and charge light are typical of charging system failure. The engine will run for a little while just on the battery. When the battery drains down, you will be stuck. I just got an alternator last night from autozone for $100 (22RE).

I have had this problem on several old Toyotas...almost always fixed it with a non-chinese junk altenator(nippendenso factory).

Odds are the guy that rebuilds them knows what he's talking about. (and Rockcruiser is right about reman ones from autozone. THEY SUCK) Follow the wiring from the back of the alternator to the big green plug on the fender. Pull it apart and check to be sure it hasn't melted. Basically the power goes through that plug to the alternator and back through that plug to the cluster to turn the light out. It also could be the plugs on the back of the cluster. (The speedo is mechanical) There are 3 or 4 of them. Unplug and replug them in.
