Lookin at a 1990 'runner with the 3.0 and an auto. The trans is shot. From what I've heard the V6 transfer cases are different than the 4cyl. Is this correct? Also what transmission does it have stock and what should I look to put back in it? It will be used only as a trail rig. I would like to keep it an auto but if there aren't any good models out there I'll just go with a manual. Just trying to look at my options before I buy something.

I agree with Chase. I would never even consider buying a 3.0 but that's my opinion. V6 case is chain and 4cyl is a gear case.

You can get an chain drive to gear drive case adapter.....The V6 is a turd but the trannys hold up pretty good. You might just wanna abandon the weak ass 3.slow and put a small block chevy with a th350 or 400 and a 205...then you would actually have some power
