I'm not very well versed in the Toyota world except for the 4 bangers. What do people think of the 4.7 V8 in the tundra? Specifically a 2002 model with an auto transmission. Good, bad, service issues/ weak spots? Any advice would be good. Btw this will be used as a daily driver and not a wheeler or a tow rig.

My father in law has one in an 06 Tundra. Its good, but not great. Power is fine (though I believe they had more power in 06) and fuel mileage is in the 15-16 range (4wd, 4 door). We bought my wife a 4runner in the past year and we test drove several with the 4.7v8 and several with the 4.0v6. I was honestly more impressed by the 4.0 v6, and thats what we went with in the end. Shes averaging about 19mpg, whereas the 4.7's seem to hang around 15mpg if thats a consideration.

My DD is an 03 with the 4.7 and automatic. Truck drives awesome and has been a great vehicle. Things to watch for, Cats and O2 sensors seem to be a weak point. I replaced both cats in 08 and they and the two rear O2 sensors failed again last year. This time i installed two MagnaFlow universal cats and Bosch O2 sensors and all has been well ever since. My truck was also part of a frame corrosion recall and had to have the drive shaft carrier bearing (housing had severe corosion ) and the gas tank straps replaced. Apparently some of the frames of that era were not properly rust treated before being assembled. Toyota inspected my truck and said there were no serious corrsion issues. Since then, in addition to the carrier bearing, and tank straps being replaced, the sway bar broke off, yes completely off the truck, and the power steering lines rusted off the rack and pinion. This happened driving down the road one day. Toyota wants $1700 for replacements, I made my own. I'm personally not very pleased with how Toyota handled this issue and seriously doubt I'll buy a new Toyota to replace this Tundra.

Go ahead and spend a little more and get an 07+ with the 5.7. Mine has 155,000 miles and I drive it like I stole it.

^^^ What he said^^^ I'm on my second 5.7 Tundra. I traded my first for a Powerstroke during a momentary lapse of common sense. It only took about 8 months to go back to a Tundra.

I just got a new tundra had a 11 tacoma and I really like the tundra I debated on witch motor to get but the 4.7 just lacked the towing capacity I was looking g for
