first off let me explain what ive helped create. its a 94 4runner chassis with a 93 extended cab and bobbed bed. 3.0 with the auto. and its up on 37" boggers. its got ngk plugs and wires, a performance chip, custom exhaust and a 14" electric fan. also running richmond 4.88's front and rear. now heres the issue were having. truck wont shift into overdrive. unhooked the fan and it hit overdrive, but the motor got a bit toasty. pulled the thermostat and saw it had been cut up by the previous owner. put in a 195 degree stat and hooked the fan up aand the truck over heated. installed a 180 degree stat and got the same result. now with the cut stat in it the heat and all worked great, just wouldnt go into overdrive. any ideas?

Where is the electric fan wired in?

so the shifter wont move into the OD position or what? you def need to post pics of this truck in the lets see your yota thread

As a professional technician, my opinion is. You got some weird shit going on there. Maybe try turning up the temp on the t stat for the fan. (Maybe it's keeping the engine just a little too cool for the trans to go into overdrive and the trans is trying to warm up the engine by staying out of over drive.) The guage in the center (where you see it at operating temp) will be a range of probably 20 to 30 degrees and maybe you're at the bottom of the range where guage says you're at operating temp but just barely.

As for the engine thermostat deal, It sounds like a water flow problem (the thermostat is a restriction to slow down the water flow so it has time to collect heat from the engine and release it in the radiator) so it sounds like you don't have enough flow since it works with less of a restriction (cut up t stat). Maybe the water pump is not flowing enough. (Though the water pump on that engine is not fun to replace since it is driven by the timing belt.)

I'm really grasping at straws here though. This is a unique issue you've got here.
