I'm statring on my Toyota Truggy and I having a hell of a time trying to decide what to do for a drivetrain.

I have just a bare 1983 frame so the slate is blank.
I really want to run dual yota cases. Trail only rig with 36's or 38's

I have time and access to find what ever for this build.
Here the list I have in my head...

1) 22RE/Toyota Auto/Dual 21 spline cases
Question with this setup is with the Automatic. Are the yota automatic's up to the task??

2) 4.3 Chevy/TH350/Dual 21 spline cases
The only problem with this setup I can see would be paying $500 for the adapter between the TH350 and Toyota cases would be a lot of added expenise, but is it worth it for a little more power/weight??

3)Maybe someone has an different idea on what to run....

HELP me decide!!

I've got an auto in my truck. Its 22re, auto, single case. I am in the process of putting dual cases and a 5 speed in right now. I tried to do some research on the auto case and what I found out is it doesn't do too well on steep inclines because of trans fluid issues(there is a mod you can do to help/fix it but seems like a big pita to do it). Also to do dual cases w/an auto you've got to buy a 450$ adapter to go from the auto tranny to the dual gear driven cases(autos have a chain driven case). I've got 39.5's on my truck and the auto just doesnt seem to do it for me, sucks out way too much power and is too expensive for me to put dual cases in. So really if you are set on those two options I would go with the chevy setup because either way you're going to have ALOT of money in adapters and I think you're going to like a v8/auto alot better than a 22re/auto.
Just my .02

Auto

The Toyota setup work great.I have an 85 w/auto and dual cases with Inchworm adaptors.Tranny fluid is not an issue on steep inclines but you do have to overfill it to compensate for the space where the original transfer case was.I have no complaints yet, it only has a handful of rides on it but im not easy on it.Good luck.

I have an auto, 22re, single case
I'm perfectly happy w/ it and never had any issues w/ inclines..?

While dual cases are def cool and ideal, if you just do 5.29 or even 5.71 diff gears, that wil get you close to the same range for way less $$ and effort. Since you have the torque converter on the a/t, going slow is no problem. Actually w/ my 5.29s in 4lo and single case I have a hard time keeping it stopped due to so much torque, w/ duals I'd think it'd be even harder.
Seems like I read somewhere you could also mate an AW4 right up to the 22re (use Toy A340 bellhousing so it mates on engine end), that opens many possibilities as well...

Fuel Injection is needed.....
-3.4l Toyota motor w/ duel cases is ver. nice. Kits and harnesses are readily available for that swap.
-Mazda Rotory
-M-Motor/5spd BMW zf and atlas would be awesome in a truggy.
just an idea or 2, sorry for getting carried away.....

351 Windsor C6 and a dana 20 w/ 4.7 gears is in the works for my bronco. going to stick with the carb though. It has un cut fenders so I want to keep it almost factory stock so I can blow the doors off of the local ricer gang. It make a nice set up for offroading also.

I have a AW4 so that may be a slick idea
Wonder were I could get a A340 Bellhousing??

Well it will generally come w/ an A340 ;-)
now keep in mind the engine side will be different for 22re vs 3vze, A340f v A340h.

Junkyard maybe? Call around, see if you can find a dead tranny, I bet they'd let you buy a junk one cheap, or heck tell them you just want the bellhousing, so they can keep the rest for recycling or whatever.
Due to teh general lack of power anyway, not many folks like the A/Ts on these trucks so they tend to sell pretty cheaply. (small demand)

What axles are you going to run?

ok so passenger side pumpkin
