I have an 85 4runner and I have stock 4.10 gears...im gonna run 33x12.5 on steelies. I don't have any money right now to upgrade to 4.88s. how bad is this gonna suck is my question? 95% dd and 5%trail truck. also, when I do upgrade should I go 5.29s or just stick to 4.88s? thanks in advance

Slow, but tolerable in most situations. Get used to almost no passing power on the highway in 5th. Clutch will get a workout on your 5% trail days. Momentum is your friend.

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY! GOOD THING I GOT A NICE CEREMIC CLUTCH...HOPEFULLY THATLL HELP.

Not too bad. I rode with 4.10 and 35s for a while. If you're going to drop the coin to regear, go ahead and go 5.29.
THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY! I WAS THINKING I MIGHT AS WELL GO ALL OUT JUST IN CASE I DECIDE ON 35S OR 37S DOWN THE ROAD. GOOD TO KNOW IT WILL BE OKAY ISH FOR NOW

I had 33s on an 85 with 4.10s. 4th was the only comfortable cruising gear. It was slow for sure the 22re. I would go straight for 5.29s.

I have a beater truck w/ 4.10s and 33s I've been driving around town for... 4 years? It's slow but tolerable. 5th useful only on the highway.
technically 5.29s and 33s is overgeared, you'll be in high RPMs on the highway, but w/ the 22re all the power is around 3700 rpm anyway.
You'll already be set for the change to 35+ later.

Thanks for the advice! I'm gonna take it. Seems like best option is just to keep it stock until I can afford the 5.29s...I drive pretty slow as it is so it shouldn't be too bad....thanks again!

5.29s and 31s ftw! Talk about power!! I drove back from Harlan to Kings Mountain like this one time. Took forever, but I was able to pull some steep hills in 5th gear.

btw w/ an auto tranny, I have found 5.29 and 33s to be just about the perfect combo. Slightly overgeared but only enough to overcome the slug of the damn auto trans.

<-- that carbed 84 Toyota has run 33.12.50 or 15 15s on stock gears for most of 32 yrs. I used it as a work truck, lightly loaded for 4 yrs. It would run fine @ 65/70 and pull piedmont hills ok in 4th, only ever put it in 5th going downhill. With a 5.29 It would run around town 45/60 mph w almost no peddle at all on flat roads while getting about 28 mpg. I also stoplight raced it/whipped some asses w the 5.29 ...........that was lot's of FUN :driver:

the 4 runner is heavier and would probly not do quite as well. I would think the 4.88 would be perfect.

I'm wondering how the hell you're getting 28 mpg.
Are you adjusting the mileage on the odometer for the overgearing?

....no, I'm not a mathmatician , but the mileage shot up alot when the 5.29 was in the truck. It would roll down flat roads in 4th or 5th w no peddle at all on level roads and just a light touch would pull it up hills. In 4 low it would idle up steep hills offroad and I got out of it and walked beside it a few times.

I'm feeling too lazy to do the math right now, but w/ 5.29s and 33s you're something like 18-20% overgeared.
so that means the odometer is reading 20% more mileage than you're actually going.... which would mean your MPGs are over my the same amount.
It works so great b/c it shifts everything up to higher RPMs, which (a) puts more effective torque per revolution of the pinion (the whole bigger gear onto a smaller one thing) and (b) moves the working range into the better power band of the 22r, it loves to be around 32-3700.

EDIT: I just did the math. If stock is 215s (~27.5") w/ 4.10, and 33s are really 32.5" then you're only around 9.1% overgeared. So it's not huge. I sure thought it was more than that.
