Toyota axle questions

I'm going to pick up my new rock/trail project on Sunday and was wanting to get some opinons and info for the build. It is a 1982 Toy 4x4. It has a non running 22r, 5sp and the stock t case. I want to run 6" leafs with missing links and I plan on running 38's locked f&r w/5.29's and the rear will have alloy shafts. Here's the questions.
1. Should I run birfield eliminators or longfields? Which manufacturer?

2. What brands of leafs give good flex for Toy's?

3. Is there a certain manufacturer I should go to for the missing links?

4. Will 6" be enough lift to clear 38's at full flex? I will be trimming and there will be no bed.

5. Who is a good manufacturer to look to for a high steer kit?

......Run longs w/ chromemoly hub gears

......Put 63" chevys in the rear w/ a 3" block and double shackles

......6" will probally get you by but you'll have to do some fender trimming on the rear, but on the front it WILL hit the cab w/ only 6" & 38's

......Trail Gear has a good hy-steer setup and it's only 300 bucks

......You'll probally be fine w/ the stock rear shafts, I've only broken one running 39's, and if you can get a rear axle out of an ifs truck it's wider than an 82 axle

......Put 63" chevys in the rear w/ a 3" block and double shackles
Will I need to extend the frame any for the 63's or just move the shackles?
How muck lift will the 63's give me?
Won't I get axle wrap with 3" blocks?
Double shackles??? Do you mean missing links?

How much lift would I need to clear the cab? I'm not worried about the rear since it will be a tube bed.

Thanks

you can try stock rears up front, and build a bastard pack with them so that you can offset the axle farther forward... the 63s will fit, if you move 1 or both hangers... the double shackles hes refering to is actually having shackles on both ends of hte springs.... basically you haveta have a link setup to run that... and then the blocks wont matter either...

RUF & 63s will give you ~3" lift, and there are guys clearing 38s with this setup and alotta trimming... check out some of the rigs on NCTTORA, to get some ideas...

ive got 63s rear with 4" springs front. i clear 38s, but i do have a body lift. i moved the rear hangers forward and made longer shackles with the stock shackle mount. theres a link to pics earlier in this thread.

1. Longfields
2.Deaver
3.Marlin crawler,Pirate 4x4
4.I have friends that run 38x11 with 3" inches of lift and flex great. Use rears up front and build your own pack.
5. 4x4 labs, marlin crawler,datin metal fabrication.

.....No you don't extend the frame you move the the front spring perches of the rear leaves forward about 11".

.....I'm running this same setup on my rig and I have little to no axle rap.

.....63's give you about 2 3/4" to 3" of lift.

......on my 93 yota I'm running 3" body and 5" springs in the front and my 38's still rub the cab a little at full flex.

......No look on pirate toyota FAQ and you'll see what I'm talking about on the double shackle deal. You take the stock 63" chevy spring, w/ the stock chevy shackle & make another H shackle and bolt it to your stock rear shackle mount.

....No you can't run a shackle on both ends of a spring........How is that supposed to work????

.....Also how are you supposed to run a link setup w/ 63 chevys.

......Double shackle uses the stock 63 shackle + another H shackle to hook to the stock shackle location....but you hook the two shackles together then to the frame.

Look on pirate toyota FAQ and there is pictures.

-Bobby Long makes a very good axle, id go with a super 30 over a dana 44 joint any day.
-Trail Gear makes a pretty good spring from what ive seen, minimal break in, hybrid packs are nice esp if you know how to "work" leaf springs and pack them with the right material.
-Missing links??? Double shackle wise, i've made some very stout .375 shackles with johnny joint centers that help with the twist in the spring and have seen very good results with them for 63's.
-Yes 6 inches should be enough with trimming
-Sky makes some solid steering, Trail gear arms are good also.

I have seen shackles at both ends, its a fawked up setup, if you link something put something that is better than leaf springs back there.

What ive seen work the best, flex/stability wise is a Trail-Gear 5" spring with a couple leaves removed, it lowers it to about a 3.5 and offers great flex with minimal axle wrap. Its what Matt Messer runs on his formula toy rig.
