Toyota brake shoes

hey guys, went to get new brake shoes for what I thought was a 85 toyota pickup rear end but what they gave me were way to small. I took my old shoes back with me to the parts store to compare and the only thing they could come up with was what they gave me originally. Does anyone have any input on what rear axle had bigger brake shoes? Thanks for any input

When you say "too small", are they too narrow, or for a drum that is too small diameter? I looked at Rock Auto, and they have various widths listed for the (standard?) 10" drum, from under 2 inches wide to over 2 inches wide, and they have noticeably different mounting setup between the main two types. I know nothing about that truck, but did some quick detective work just based on what parts were listed.

What's the drum diameter of your existing axle?

If you have the standard 10" drum that seems to be the common option on that truck, it sounds like their parts system is wrong and you've got shoes for a different vehicle or for a vehicle with rear discs and a drum parking brake.

It could be an IFS rear axle. Those do have larger brake shoes.

Looking at rock auto:
IFS rear uses 11.61" x 2" shoes.
Solid axle rear uses 10 x 2-3/16" shoes.

I wasnt sure that maybe it is a 4 runner rear if they had a different rear brake setup

For the leaf sprung 80's models they are the same from pickup to 4runner. I am not positive of changes after 1990.
I am pretty sure they used the same brake shoe sizes on the 4wd and the heavy duty RWD axles.

From what i have measured, the drum is roughly 11 5/8". From what i have reasearched it takes a 568 series brake shoe from a '86

That lines up with the shoe measurements I posted above. Probably an IFS width rear axle.

I found that IFS shoes are also year dependent, the shoe linings are the same length but the shoe spine is slightly longer where it fits into the wheel cylinder and adjuster.

this was VERY aggravating i had installed the rear axle from my '87 pickup into my '85 Runner, then found another axle from an '86 to install back into the pickup. i had shoes for the '87, tried to put them on the '86 axle, they went on fine, but they stuck out too far to allow the drum to slide on.

after close inspection found that the end of the shoe that fits into wheel cyl and adjuster was about 1/8" longer, so the shoe sat out further. it took awhile to figure out.

Yes, '86-'95 IFS axle was 3" wider over all, 1.5" longer outside the spring perches, and did have larger diameter drums and shoes,

This.
Sounds like a PO swapped out the rear at some point for an IFS axle.

Yes your correct , I have an 86 and it uses different shoes and wheel cylinders than the later models , Ive replaced both shafts with pull-a-part assemblies so I have a real mess on my hands , my advice would be to get later model backing plate assemblies (88-95 i think) or convert to disc
