So, I took my 2000 Tundra to the Pinehurst Toyota dealer today to have a pre-sale inspection done at the request of the new buyer.

Inspection went well until they discovered a rotted place on the frame that Toyota has advised all dealers to inspect when on the lift. Toyota corporate was immediately notified and they immediately agreed to REPLACE THE FRAME at no cost to me. Frame scheduled to arrive in 3 weeks and free labor will amount to 2 technicians working continuously for 3-5 days. All I can say is WOW Toyota. Free frame replacement on a 11 year old truck. Wonder if your favorite brand would do this for you?

Hope to get pics during the swap.:D

Yeah, they would be buying my vehicle and not replacing my frame. How the hell is it cost effective to replace an entire frame rather than buy out the truck and scrap it?

That's like $5000 in lost labor costs, plus the costs of the frame. This repair is going to be so much more than the value of the truck.

Just stupid.

It ain't a Jeep man. It's worth more than $5k, Plus it's called, (And I wouldn't expect any domestic owners to understand this) Standing behind your product. They were replacing engines and head gaskets up to 200k on the 3.0 liter FOR FREE. Think an American car manufacturer would do that at even 36001 miles?

And I pity those 2 technicians.

Plus the cost of the frame, and the shipping, and the other random parts that will break when you are swapping an entire frame.

They had a ton of issues with these frames breaking in half, and most of the time Toyota will buy them back. Hence my thought that it is STUPID to fix it.

I worked with a guy back when I lived in Greensboro that drove a 2000 Tundra. They put it on the lift one day and frame was so rusted that it cracked. They bought it from him that day for like $2k more than blue book, and this was in 2006.

I did a little more research and it appears that rusted frame recall only applied to northern states that use salt on the roads.

I suspect they are replacing the frame so that this doesn't turn into ammunition for the NHTSA to force them to extend that recall to all states. It's probably easier for them to cover-up a frame swap as opposed to buying back a vehicle and scraping it.

Makes me curious about what kind of issues are being covered-up with my 4Runner.

I'm pretty sure my favorite brand doesn't have issues with frames falling apart like the Toyotas do. I was looking at possibly buying a Tundra several years ago and found out this little frame issue. I'll keep driving my '95 3/4 ton chevy with a spotless frame. A spotless frame that lived 10 years in the north.
I wouldn't say WOW toyota I'd say DAMN toyota, over 20 years and still having issues with rusty frames.
Exactly. Toyota needs to stop using chinese steel.

Chevy actually did this with the Duramax. :shaking:

Toyota was buying back Tacomas at blue book retail prices because they were breaking in half after 5 years on the road. I don't really care if you think that means they stand behind their product... it tells me they think buying it back from you is cheaper than your lawsuit would be.

I agree, doesnt seem cost effective to me... But I guess in the long run the cost to repair it is less than the cost of having evidence against their crap steel.

Hey.. At least ya get half of a new truck outta it!
