I was replacing the thermostat on a 89 corolla. When tightening it all back up I over tightened one of the nuts and broke the stud. Are these studs replaceable? There should be enough still there to get vise grips on it. Or am I going to have to drill and tap????? Thank you in advance for any advice. Thanks James

They're probably replaceable. A stud is a stud. Pull the thermostat out and see how many threads are left. If there's enough for 2 nuts, run one down and then the other on top of it and then use the first one to back the stud out. If not give the vice grips a go, just don't mar the sealing surface of the thermostat housing or it might not seal up again. They also have "stud removers" at Auto zone and the like that are pretty good. If it's rusted hit it with PB plaster first.

Thanks. I will try using 2 nuts then the vise grips. It got dark on me and I wasn't sure if the studs were removable or not. Thanks again

I would think the cast alum. WP housing would crack before the stud broke,or Timing cover would crack and letgo of the stud. I guess the stud was corroded and eaten away?

Dumbass.

Its a 26 y/o part. God knows what its been through.
This kind of thing happens!

As mentioned - a stud is a stud. What motor?
It's probably an M8 stud, don't know for sure but I'd bet good $$ the thread pitch is 1.25
