My rear pinion seal is leaking bad, closer inspection shows some slight slop in the pinion trying to rock it up and down holding the driveshaft. Can I replace the seal and re-tighten to fix or will I need a new crush sleeve or more parts/repair to remedy this? It has 150K on it.

Depending on the year it shouldn't have a crush sleeve it will have a solid spacer. I'd just replace the seal and run with it.

what years would that be

Honestly I can't remember, all the ones I've seen have been solid spacer but I have heard there are crush sleeve ones.

Thanks for the replies, I found my manual and the spacer on 79-87 is deformable during preload/tourqing the nut back on and may need to be replaced it during the procees, won't know till I try I guess. I also evedently need an inchpound torquewrench so I might just get somone to fix it for me instead.

I wish..........I can feel and see the shield over the snout ( moving/rocking just a smidgen ) while pulling hard up/down on the driveshaft and have had some vibration at various speeds/power before the leak started. I think the pinion bearing is shot?? I have 2" springs, and 3" tapered blocks I installed backwards I think, (short side of taper to the front), and the diff. is angled up steeper than the trans w a 2 u joint shaft, which I now know is not correct they should be parallel. I'm guessing the clash/strain of the ujoints and misaligned flanges has damaged the pinion bearing.:eek:ops:

Hi, I am assuming it is an 8" 3rd member either a a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder. Do not use a crush sleeve especailly if you wheel it off road. Install a solid spacer, it is only a few bucks more and will give you much more peace of mind.

yeah go with a solid spacer new seal new bearings
