I am trying to help a friend that has a 88 short wb 4x4 truck with a 22re{ blown }. he has a 80' 20r completely rebuilt with trany and t case available at a steel. is it possible to do and if so what problems might occure. it's only used for local trips and around the farm. Thanks

Biggest problem is just the loss of power, you're going from an underpowered motor to an even older more underpowered one.

If you swap everything, complete motor w/ intake and all, should be pretty straightforward, I believe the motor mounts are the same etc. Also you'll need to remove the whole ECU business from the old one, swap over everything w/ the new.

In what way is the 22re blown? You could do a 22/20r combo and get a lot more power (22 block, 20r head).

Not to mention if it is an L-series trans It will be shorter therefore D-shafts, crossmember, ect won't work.

Good point.
BUT - I believe you could bolt the 20r right up to the '88 transmission, may need to keep the bellhousing from the 22re side.
