I've got a 86 toyota with a 4 cyl and auto trans. It does have 4.30 gears, but I've got 31's under in now on 10" wheels and it wants to shift alot in and out of overdrive. I plan on lifting it and running at least 33's and probably 35's. I mainly use this truck for hunting, but I still avg. 200 miles a week doing that. What gears would you run that would have a good hwy/light offroad and still run 55-60 mph?

5.29 and don't look back. I know there will be people that will say thats too low but with 35s it will be where it needs to be with an automatic. It will keep it from shifting so much.

5.29' for sure if your thinking 35's,. 4.88if you will never go bigger than 33's. i would error on the side of 5.29 as you always want to go bigger

Guys are right on gearing, but I would look at swapping to a 5 speed unless you like the auto-trans.

Why? There is nothing wrong with the auto. As long as its not already slipping it should be just fine. However its #1 enemy is heat so at the least add a good cooler. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

I don't mean to steal his thread but i have a 5 speed and planning on doing the thing, what would you do then?

Still go with 5:29's

I just threw that out there about the manual trans swap because i know it would cost less than regearing. I run 35's with 4.10's and a 5 speed and had an 86 auto with auto that was not shifting right, swapped in a 5 speed with the 4.30's and 33's seemed to be perfect setup for mild wheeling/dd. If I had plenty of $ I would have 5.29's with e-lockers also, but I live in the real world where kids eat alot LOL!

I'm not much on the auto, but a trans swap would mean flywheel, clutch/pressure plate, flywheel, possible driveshafts(?), and whatever it would take to get a clutch pedal. Just seems like gears would be easier, but I'm not sure. Can't really see where price would be much difference, unless I had a parts truck.

If you're swapping gears, ithe cost difference between gear sizes is pretty minimal.
Anotehr vote here for 5.29.
I have an '89 Runner w/ auto and 4 cyl, yup had the 4.30s. i went up to 4.88s, that fixed the problem w/ 31 - but as soon as I went up to even 32 it was suckin' again. i ditched 'em for 5.29s and 33s and it is waaaay better.
If you do the math, 5.29 is just slightly overgeared for 33s on the AT. Remember, Toyota's own matchin gwas 4.88 on only 31s. Yes, the RPMs are a little higher on teh highway, BUT that's actually where the 22re is more effecicient and it runs better that way, IMO this motor is really alive only above 3k. I wish I'd listened to other people's advice and not even messed w/ the 4.88s.
